"Father returning home"
By: Joaquin Tiraboschi
Poem
First stanza:

My father travels on the late evening train
Standing among silent commuters in the yellow light
Suburbs slide past his unseeing eyes
His shirt and pants are soggy and his black raincoat
Stained with mud and his bag stuffed with books
Is falling apart. His eyes dimmed by age
fade homeward through the humid monsoon night.
Now I can see him getting off the train
Like a word dropped from a long sentence.
He hurries across the length of the grey platform,
Crosses the railway line, enters the lane,
His chappals are sticky with mud, but he hurries onward.
Poem
Second stanza:

Home again, I see him drinking weak tea,
Eating a stale chapati, reading a book.
He goes into the toilet to contemplate
Man’s estrangement from a man-made world.
Coming out he trembles at the sink,
The cold water running over his brown hands,
A few droplets cling to the greying hairs on his wrists.
His sullen children have often refused to share
Jokes and secrets with him. He will now go to sleep
Listening to the static on the radio, dreaming
Of his ancestors and grandchildren, thinking
Of nomads entering a subcontinent through a narrow pass.
Who is the author?
The author of the poem is, Dilip Chitre, he:

-Was born in Barada, on september 17 in 1938.
-His father was Purushottan Chitre.
-Published her first collection in 1960.
-Was also a director.
-In "Father Returning Home" he describes his own father.

describing first stanza
The main idea of the first stanza is to describe how his father returned home in a train after a long, hard day of working. It seems like he is very tired and frustrated. He is dirty and tired, his clothes are stained with mud. We get to know that the train is very silent and no one talks. It is also night. I think that the author tries to emphasis on how blue and tired he feels. He is like boring of always the same so he doesnt pay attention on the way home or the people because he knew it to much. He is old, he isnt ingnorant because he is carrying books so we get the impression that Dilip's father is a teacher or maybe a librarian.
Describing second stanza
The main idea of the second stanza is to describe what does the father does when he returns home. He is alone drinking a tea and an old bread. He thinks of his family and feels upset. In my opinion the father alienate his family, they had a distance relationship, he almost have no connection. However he doesnt do anything to improve it. "Listening to the static in the radio, dreaming of his ancestors and grandchildren, thinking of nomads entering a subcontinet through a narrow pass..." it seems two things. From one hand "dreaming of his ancestors and grandchildren.." looks like he wants to escape reality. From the other hand "thinking of nomads entering a subcontinent through a narrow pass" it seems like the father imagine how was his life before colonization, kind of past. "He goes into the toilette to contemplate mans estrangment from a man made world" with this sentece we could get to know that he was watching his face at the mirror and he feels strange and different from the others. This feeling he also had it in the train and even with his own family.
tone of the poem
The poem has a serious tone because the poet is describing the type of life that his father had, he speaks about how his father alienated himself from other people from his own family, where even his own children didnt share anything with them. The other tone is melancholic because we can understand the pain and the misery of the poets father when he travels in the train and when he is at home. In the poem there is a "twilight atmosphere" because of the colours that appear like "evening train", "yellow lights and "grey platform".
The theme of the poem
In my opinion alienation refers to the distance relationship the father had with his own family, almost not connection and they didn't share anything. However he didnt make anything to to improve it. This sentence: " His sullen children have often refused to share jokes and secrets with him..." would refer to this distance relationship. I think that the father also alienate from the commuters in the train, like they didn't pay attention to him. "Like a word drop from a long sentence".

The poem has also an estrangement theme. It seems like he feels strange and different from the commuters and also with his family. We could get to know this when Dilips father was on the toilette and he watch himself at the mirror and feel strange with this new life.
Literary devices
"I can see him getting of the train like a word dropped from a long sentence" means that many commuters were getting off the rain, however anyone notice that the father was also getting off. In other words it means that "long sentece" refers to all the commuter and "word dropped" the father. This quote is also a metaphor an a similie as it have LIKE.

Visual image: "I see him drinking a weak tea, eating a stale chapati, reading a book", and "Standing among silent commuters in the yellow light" is a visual and auditory image. "Mans estrangment from a man made world" it is a metaphor refering to difference the father feels with this new world. " Is falling apart. His eyes dimmed by age fade homeward through the humid monsoon night" it is a sensory, a visual image and a metaphor.
