Knowledge Building   for NCEA Results
Can Level 2 and Level 3 students build knowledge as a community, which translates to Merit and Excellence results in NCEA assessments?
Through Online Classical Studies
The Fibonacci Sequence and Knowledge Building
The Fibonacci Sequence
This is everywhere.
It is a mathematical sequence in which a number is the sumof the two numbers before it.
It appears as spirals.
CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT OF IDEAS
The goal of knowledge building is “the production and continual improvement of ideas of value to a community”
(Scardamalia & Bereiter)
Can Classics students become a community?
Can they build on an idea, contributed by students before them, which is valuable to their community?
Can they build knowledge?
Can we measure that kb against the NCEA criteria for achieving Standards with Merit and Excellence?
How did we do it?
?
  • Two online Classics classes
  • Two teachers for instruction
  • Two communities for KB
  • One teacher to run KB over the top
  • Use of Knowledge Forum profiles for internal assessments and preparation for external assessments

Examples
from
Knowledge
Forum
Students create knowledge by building on a previous contribution.
Build-ons
  • answer a question
  • add information
  • ask another question
  • compare with another idea
We should see
a web develop.
Ask big questions.
Create a view with a wide-scope open question at the centre so students can begin by giving a variety of answers.
As they build-on to others' contributions, the web will start to form.
Will I get Merit or Excellence from this?

Development
Stories are an important source of cultural value as it is what influences and molds readers into the person that they become. Stories are a representation of what greeks and romans saw in reality as being good or bad
Hayley, I found what you said about influencing the reader into who they are really interesting. Of course, just because the Aeneid was written a while ago doesn't mean it doesn't affect the reader the same as modern books. Readers everywhere will understand the impact of one single book, even one sentence. So I think the Aeneid can still be a relevant source of cultural values, whether we agree or disagree. Like in Book 1 when Venus asks Cupid to make Dido fall in love with Aeneas, this is manipulation. And back then it may have been acceptable for a goddess to use her power, however we learn that this manipulation may not end well. So we (in the modern age) can learn from the Aeneid about the effects of manipulation and use that knowledge when manipulation is still very active today.
Anna, again, I agree with your statement. Many epic poems last the ages because there are elements that still apply to modern society. Many people on Earth today see manipulation as a negative thing to do (I'm just going to use your example if that's okay :) ) but perhaps maybe because it was a goddess who was doing the manipulation people of society at that time may have seen it as more acceptable because of her divinity. I also think that books such as the Aeneid can be influential not just in interactions between humans/divinities but also more intangible 'is-it-real-it-is-not?' concepts such as Fate because later on in the Aeneid, Venus' interference and manipulation has consequences for both Aeneas and Dido. So the Aeneid is influential in the way it can challenge the way people think about concepts such as Fate and and also to learn that manipulation could have either positive or negative effects, depending on the circumstances
Why are stories an important source of cultural values?
Yes Keely, what you said about books such as the Aeneid influencing us not just about the tangible consequences but also the intangible ideas. I think that stories are also an important source of cultural values because they challenged us about things that seemed 'impossible' or not visible. I think that stories that challenge us about ideas like reality v.s fantasy are important as they make people reflect and ask themselves why they truly value. And maybe because the Aeneid is quite old, that it has a bigger impact. Because people then didn't know the things we know know or have the technology to access information, like the internet. And people reading the Aeneid today will be able to compare what we have been taught, or know and challenge it.
Marking for Assessment
Although the class creates a community and builds knowledge which belongs to that community,
it is possible to pull out a profile for each individual student which is evidence for their Internal Assessment.

KEY: Take this from Views directly related to each Achievement Standard.
In my case, the titles of the Achievement Standards.

KB for me in 2017
  • Teach the class all the time
  • Introduce the KB Principles and Processes from the start
  • Continue balance between "Do this now," and allowing for individual buy-in
  • Expect evidence in every contribution
  • Derive evidence directly from portfolios
