  • Mount Etna is located on the east coast of an island in Italy, Sicily.
  •  It is in the northern hemisphere.
  • Coordinates: 37.734N, 15.004E
  •  Tectonic plate: between African and Eurasian plate.
Geographic Location
Background Info
  • Mount Etna is 10,900 feet tall with a circumference of 93 miles.
  •  Mount Etna is has the longest record of continuous eruptions.
  •  Etna’s eruptions have been documented since 1500BC
  • It’s most powerful eruption was in 1669 when it’s lava flow continued for more that ten miles away.
  • It’s longest eruption was in 1979 and it went on for thirteen years.
  • Mount Etna’s lava flow is slow (high viscosity)
Classification of            volcano

  •  Eruption frequency: Mount Etna’s eruptions occur at an average of once every 1.7 years.
  • Shape: Mount Etna is a stratovolcano which means it is very steep and explosive.
  • Past eruptions: There are large lava flows but rarely cause danger to inhabited areas.
          Eruptions
Eruptions from Mount Etna produce ash, tephra (rock fragments), and lava fountains.
Mount Etna’s most recent eruption was in December 3, 2015.
About a quarter of the population in Sicily is on the slopes of Mount Etna.
There are about 5.082 million as of May 31 2015.
The Eurasian and African plate were pushing towards each other (convergent plate).

  • The Eurasian and African plates pushed towards each other (convergent boundary) to form the volcano.
  •  Some major cities are: Catania, Nicolosi, Adrano, Randazzo.

Hazards

  •  Most people are able to escape before it erupts.
  • Some cases the explosions were deadly but most don’t cause danger.
  • Some hazards are: lava flows, tephra falls, earthquakes, volcanic sector collapse, tsunami, pyroclastic flows.
Risks
  • I think that Mount Etna may cause more deaths in the future because the eruptions are getting more frequent.
  • There are dangerous explosions which kill many people in the cities near the volcano.
