Optical Illusions
By: Tanay Dunthuluri

Stare at the cross and the pink dots will disappear.

This Illusion is called the Lilac Chaser  Illusion.

Illusions process in the brain. They change your perception of reality making you think that what is true is false, and what is false is true. Most of the time, your eyes, body, and head are in motion. This makes it hard to detect an object in motion with a image in motion. In a movie, we believe that the objects are moving, but they are just pictures that have been placed in such a fast motion that the object seems to be moving. Your brain interprets things that are not possible.

This is just a lot of pictures shown very quickly. This is an illusion because we think that the characters are moving.
The regular eye can detect 130 gradations of color. When shown to of the same very bright colors, the second one will look more faded because the eye has already adapted to the brightness.

Uninterrupted Illusions
Many Illusions are ones that can be inverted to make different images. Images can look different depending on how you first perceive the image.
Images in an Illusion.
Do you see a mouse, a cat, or a mouse about to be eaten by a cat.
Impossible Images
Many illusions are shown possible to make, but really impossible. Usually, just a couple parts in the image are messed with, so that the image is made an optical illusion. These types of illusions are impossible.
Some parts like the ladder are twisted to help create the illusion.

Staring at a single bright spot in a darkened room creates an illusion that the bright spot is moving. Minute eye movement causes this impression. Minute eye movement is a system in the brain that causes this reaction.

Illusions and Light

Illusions can look different at special views.

Ponzo Illusion

The Ponzo illusion is the one on the right.

The two lines in the image are perfectly similar, but your visual system perceives that the second bar is longer because the image makes you believe that the objects are going further back.

After Image Illusions
Stare at the black dot in each image for 30 seconds, then look at the grey area and the image will reflect the star or heart.
Distortion Illusions
Distortion Illusions make an image seem smaller, shorter, longer, larger, or to be a different shape or color.

Distortion Illusions
This is the same image just flipped over to create to images.
Looks normal when it is flipped upside down, but when you flip it back up, it's a whole lot different.
Color and Shadow Illusions
These color and shadow illusions are misleading because it depends on the way we see things such as the contrast, color, and background.
