Star Theory
Richard Dyer came up with the idea that artists are constructed through artificial images like advertising, films, magazines and music videos. The manufacturing of icons and celebrities and made by insinuations for the financial gain of those businesses. Constructing these artists to represent 'real people' that experience real emotions is a selling point to gain an audience so they are relatable.
Industry and audiences
Dyer believes stars are created this way in order to make money for their label. Record labels market various artists in a certain way according to their target audience so they can cater to them
Hegemony
Gramsci's theory of hegemony is the belief that the dominant is above others and their power is accepted as the cultural norm.
This is shown in artists as popular artists are so powerful that the audiences attempt to copy the star's actions as they admire them so much.
 Britney Spears
Spears is an iconic figure in music who was contructed to become a female role model for teen girl's in the music industry. Her image is marketed in a way that suits which audience her label is catering to. As we can see from her fashion and songs.
In Spears' early videos her image was very much over a girly type figure as in her music video 'Baby One More Time' she is seen with pigtails, cute makeup and pink clothes. The dance routine featured in the video shows her with a squad of people, this makes the audience desire to wanting to be apart of her group. Spears shows a cool image with her fashion forward style. As well as portraying a innocent teenage girl there is also some underlying sexuality. This gives an image of empowerment of young teen women as she is owning her sexuality and not afraid to show it.
