Similarities & Differences

Similarities

Both have dirty clothes and unhygienic.

They are both showing similar facial expressions which are upset.

Body language is slumped and negative as they have not been treated with any respect

Both are of a similar  age going through a similar situation not having a home

Differences

The boy in the road is in an outdoor environment.

Emotion looks much more enthusiastic and real on The boy in the road.

Kodi Smit-McPhee has more layers of clothing so it seems to be as if he has been homeless for a lot longer than the way James looks

Having a younger homeless boy makes the audience feel more sad and down about the way he is living at such a young age which is why it is very effective to use children.

Gender
Stereotypes of gender-
Male:
James & Harrison
Messy/dirty (James)
Aggressive violent

 Female:
 Mum & Sophie (the feelings)
 Emotional (Mum)
 Clean & Tidy
 Caring
Our representation of gender is very stereotypical in our film opening as we liked to way the male victim would be perceived and have the common look of being dirty, messy and can be violent.

We created our twist to this as the victim was very timid and vulnerable where as male characters are seen as strong and confident. this is the opposite to our character.

The stereotype of females in our film opening is that they are the ones that show and express their feelings for you to see so people know. In our film the mother of Josiah explains how she feels about him being missing.

Characters linked with a real person

This is an article that we have found that we linked our opening with as this was a fairly well spoke about event that made the news. This kidnapping was very similar to the idea that we was trying to produce in the planning phase so this helped us take details out of the articles that we can put into our piece so it will look and seem more realistic.
Quotes with links between films

The Road

"The Boy: Are you carrying the fire?

Veteran: Am I what?

The Boy: Carrying the fire.

Veteran: You're kind of weirded out, aren't you, kid?

The Boy: Well, are you?

Veteran: Yeah. I'm carrying the fire."

Locked Up

"There are two sides to every life"

In the opening of our film 'Locked Up' we did not use much dialogue so we can't link it with the quotes that I found.
We give Josiah (James) the impression to the audience that he is not normal and is described as weird to people that want to know how he is after his experience.
We believe he is weird because he hasn't come in contact with humans properly for over 12 years.
Josiah links with Kodi as older people see both characters as being weird and that they have a lot of power over them because they are much older then the characters.
Role Of character in film

Both characters are homeless and have a very unhygienic, poor lives so far as they are both young people.

Both the characters are seen as being very weird and this has been from the older people that have been in contact with them.

The difference between the two characters linking with older people is that in 'Locked Up' the person that captured Josiah is a adult aged around 40. This means that he got no respect for Josiah where as in The Road the person that is looking after and caring for the boy is making sure nothing bad will happen to him and is protecting him as much as he can with what he has.
