sama.ansaripourLooking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
QUESTION 7
By Sama Ansari Pour
Introduction to the question & my progress
Before doing the prelim, I didn't have any editing skills whatsoever, I understood the basic concept of film because I did Media Studies GCSE, but we never produced any film work.
Some of the key things I feel that I have learnt from my prelim to my finished product is the importance of sound. A product without sound is not truly a product, you can have the best actor, but if the sound is not good you cannot wreck up emotion.
Another thing that I have learnt is to use things to your benefit. We used title credits to our benefit, as we had a lot of jump cuts and our footage wasn't seamless. Also, due to our plot line, there had to be a reason and cause for every shot, to show the audience what the character wasn't seeing.
Skills before Prelim
Key things I have learnt
Skills developed in the pre-production stage
Coming up with ideas and being creative
Before, for the prelim we were guided on it. We were given a setting and a prop, the actual idea look us minutes to decide as we just needed to link the two. But coming up with ideas for the title sequence took us weeks, as we had many different ideas. One was too explicit (to do with drugs) and we had to scrap that idea. In the new group (compared to the Prelim group) we all had different idea's and wants, so it took an increased amount of time as we were free to choose and had a lot of imagination. When coming up for ideas, we also did a bit of researching, asking the teacher about what the exam board likes and past successful student work, and making sure that it stuck with the guidelines.

Making storyboards
For the prelim, the storyboard we drew a rushed one and it was drawn badly with no effort because it was our first time - it was very simplistic. For our title sequence, we used an online storyboard creater called 'Storyboard That' in which it was like actual shots, so we could see and predict clearly what would happen. Also, we annotated it to give more of an idea to us.

Before, quite messy and unorganised
After, with clear visuals and annotations
Making a shot list
With the prelim, we simply sketched out an idea on a sheet of paper which was simplistic, as it was again, our first time but we didn't think much into it as we didn't use our shots for effect. Furthermore, there were not many shots. However, for our title sequence, we had multiple ideas so we had multiple shot lists. We organised them well, typed it out and kept a paper copy and we were more experienced at it, and more confident.
Before, a few shots, messy and unorganized.
After, laid out in order, organized and specifying every shot
Planning locations, costumes and props
In the beginning, the location and prop was planned for us, so we didn't have to really do much. The costume was simple and required no creativity - arsenal flag, arsenal kit as the costume, police interrogation rood, police wear (to the best of our ability) for the costume. However, for the title sequence we used everything to our ability, we had organisation when we planned the day we would film and re film, we all agreed and chose the props and the costumes were handpicked and styled by me, to fit the purpose of regular teens.

The location we filmed at
Mise-en-scene - SFX makeup
To make our work different from the other groups, we added in the work of SFX makeup. For the Prelim, we never thought of doing this or going this extra but we really believed it would add to the disturbance of the film

First we got Jerome and Ali to rip up tissue to mix with the liquid latex
Then mapped it out on her face in a smile shape
Then I (Sama) added shadow and fake blood to create dimension
How it looks on camera
Arranging & planning travel & transport
In the beginning for the Prelim we just did it in class, there were no travel and transport related issues. For the opening title sequence, we agreed within the groupchat to meet at Camden station at 12:30 and I (Sama) will take them to my house. We would have enough time to prepare the set and to do the SFX makeup. We scheduled to do this on the 3rd of December, as that's after when the Pitch work is due, so we have time to edit our ideas, but we also have time to redo some shots if needed. They would have money on their oyster to take the train from Angel, on the Northern line to Camden Station where I will pick them up to take them to my house using the 24 bus.

Skills developed in the production stage
Filming
For the prelim, it was difficult to frame the shots, and some of the shots we took were shaky. Furthermore, the pan shots were not smooth and I didn't really have the hang of filming. Filming for opening sequence was much better, I could pan smoothly, angle a birds eye view shot perfectly, showing my improvement in framing. However, we did need to re film, but that was due to it being unrealistic and not having enough shots.

Recording Foley sound
In the beginning we didn't add any sound in at all, so I had no experience. During production, we recording the sound of the tap running and the door smashing shut in order to add dimension with the soundtrack that we chose.

Me and Jerome editing the sound to make it higher in order to hear it over the soundtrack
Directing the performance
In the beginning I tried to direct the actors and actresses with little creativity and vision, and as I couldn't really work the camera well, they couldn't perform well. However, with the title sequence I directed well because I knew the importance of the shots, made sure I got different angles and versions of the shots and gave easy and clear instructions to my peers to follow

Me (Sama) directing Ali to get down in position for the next shot and preparing him for his next scene
Performance of actors/actresses
Acted well, as she had to lay dead and flat down.
Ali
Performed well but could not convey emotion, so we cut out all dialogue and got rid of some of the scenes of him talking (they were generally not needed)
Niamh
Acted well, as she had to lay dead and flat down.

Skills developed in the post-production stage
Editing in Premier Pro
Before I could barely do editing, I couldn't make my clip longer or shorter, cut it, copy it or place it in order. However, during the title sequence I was the one doing the majority of editing, I learnt a lot. I learnt how to add in sound, how to use different tools and how to do the colour gradient, how to arrange and to do credits.

Using After Effects
We used after effects to do the ident. At first I couldn't use sound with the ident and I didn't realize the difference it could make. For the opening sequence I added a bears roar (as the ident is of a bear) and it made the world of a difference and made it look so much more professional and realistic.
This is the ident and logo for our distribution company that we chose
Creating and animating titles
Before I did not know how to move the text on the title, now I can fully function it. The title credits were Niamh's part, but I learnt how to do it to. I downloaded the new fonts to make it look less plain, which I couldn't do before. When creating the credits we learnt that we could not repeat the names so we had to make some up, and also I learnt how to use them to our advantage (as we had a lot of jump cuts).

An example of one of the title sequences with the font that we have chosen
Creating a sound scape
Before I didn't know the importance of sound and I didn't use it at all in my prelim. However, for the title sequence we used it and I learnt how to heighten the intensity of the sound, how to merge two sounds together, and how to edit the sound to apply effects and to fade it out.

Here is us editing the sound
Hidden skills
Teamwork
In the beginning I felt awkward because I didn't know the other peers. But towards the end I bonded and created friendships with them, we worked well and everyone knew their assets and used them effectively
My team
Negotiating tasks
In the beginning for the prelim we didn't really negotiate, we just went with what was best at the time. With the title sequence, we negotiated well with organization. Niamh does the title credits, Jerome and Ali come up with the idea, and Jerome gives the sound, Ali films, I do majority of the editing but everyone does some editing along the way as well.

Niamh editing and doing the title credits
Taking control of my own learning & being independent
In the beginning I found it difficult because I was not used to it, it was alien to me. But now I can work efficiently and well.

Evaluating my success & concluding on my progress
How successful do you feel you have been with each product?
For the prelim, I think I wasn't overly successful. The prelim itself wasn't good, but the objective of understanding the 180 degree rule and match cutting I was successful in. I gained the knowledge to better myself. For the remake, I don't feel successful because I had the knowledge but I didn't perform it well. Also, we didn't have enough time, and the setting itself was difficult to get shots of. But, for the title sequence I feel like I was successful. I came through a lot of obstacles within every angle (the shots, the title credits, the lighting, the sound) but I (and the rest of my group overcame all the problems to show a product with creativity and I am happy with it.

What have you learned about production work & what are some of the considerations and difficulties?
What I learnt about production work is that there will be a problem facing you every step of the way. Whether it to be time, or the sounds not right, or the computer, you have obstacles you need to overcome in order to succeed. I also learnt that you cannot film everything in one day - you will always find shots that don't fit, or you don't have enough, or it's too shaky. Some considerations is to film everything at least three times, so when coming to selecting clips, incase there is one clip that is faulty, you still have a selection of two more. One difficulty is to get all the shots in the same lighting on the day, because even if you colour grade it, it may get too pixeleted.

What skills do you feel you have been most successful in developing between the prelim and the final title sequence?
The skill that I feel like I have been the most successful in developing between the prelim and the final title sequence is editing. During the prelim stage, I had no idea whatsoever on how to edit. I could barely arrange, let alone cut clips or make them longer. I always had to be supervised and every few minutes I would be asking the teacher for help. However, now, during the final title sequence I can do it all. I have changed the colour of my clips, added filters, I have edited sound. I can create title credits, I understand how long to put everything in for and I look for practical solutions to problems before asking for help.

Me (Sama) editing
If you were to do this project again, what would you change or do differently?
One thing I would do is to be more dedicated and to stop wasting time. During the last lesson that we had to give in our work, I came under so much stress because we didn't finish our title sequence and we didn't even add any sound. We managed and succeeded, but I would have done my best to put in more effort and to stop slacking. I would also change the image (in the title sequence, there is an image of the friends with blood smeared across. This is where our character realizes the situation) to one of me, Ali and Niamh. We had Jerome in the image because he was meant to be in the title sequence and not me, but he broke his leg and could not do any acting so the roles were reversed.
The image that I would change
What have you learnt about being a media producer and what can you do that you couldn't do before?
I've learnt that it is stressful but rewarding, but I enjoy it. I've learnt you need to have commitment, patience and determination, and have plenty of stamina. You also have to be highly organised, with strong research and planning skills. I have so many things that I can do now that I could not do before. Before, I could not really work in a team and do group work, as I would find it awkward and annoying, but now I can get along with my peers and we all can work efficiently together. I have learnt how to film properly and how to work a camera that I could not do well before, how to edit, and also how to create good ideas. I've understood the importance of sound and how to work with my target audience. I have gone out of my comfort zone and learnt how to do SFX makeup for the benefit of our title sequence, and I could not do anything mise-en-scene related before.
