evaluation question 7

Q7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in progression from it to the full product?
1. Intro to question and statement about your progress
The main skills that I have learnt are how to efficiently and successfully edit the title sequence. I learnt how to cut the shots and make them consistent. I also learnt how to add in sounds and music. Compared to the prelim I only knew the basic skills of cutting and joining the shots together. My skills were very limited when doing the prelim because for example I didn't know how to add in sound. But whilst doing the the final title sequence I was able to add in effects such as fading in.
Another skill that I learnt how to film using the different equipments. When doing the prelim there were some shaky shots but during the course of the final product I learnt how to use the fig rig and tripod properly so that we had still and professional looking shots.
Prelim
This is a very basic edit. We only cut and joined shots together.
Final product
Only cutting and adding of shots, no sounds except from sound that was shot whilst filming. No sounds added in or thought about (diegetic or non diegetic)
We cut and joined shots, added in sound, had special effects, added in title credits and transitions.
Compared to the prelim edit, there are more elements on the timeline for our final product.
2. Pre-production -  Storyboard
For our prelim we had a very brief storyboard just so that we knew the plot. It was not descriptive and just had what needed to happen in each shot. We also had to think about the shots and change them around as we weren't sure what would work.
For our actual film we had drafts of our storyboards. We included what type of shot it would be and what would happen in each shot. We used the storyboard as an outline and more shots were added that weren't included in the storyboard but fit in with the plot. It is not a perfect storyboard but it was clear to each member of the group what was going on in each scene.
2. Pre-production -  Research
For the prelim we did no research. We were only given a brief and from that we made up our ideas. A rough plan was made and then we were taught the basics of how to film and use the camera and how to edit. Then we went off to film. We had no concepts or idea of what genre the film was or audience we were appealing to etc.
On the other hand for our film opening we spent a lot of time outside and during lessons researching and planning. We came up with a brief plot outline and the genre we wanted to do. We researched films within the thriller genre and distributions companies. We also knew what kind of audience our film would had and from there we decided on what would appeal to them.
2. Pre-production -  Location and prop planning
In our prelim we didn't plan to film at any location as we did not have time to so we had to film in college. We had to work with what we had so we went to the front of the college where there are automatic doors which acted as our 'bus doors'. Our prelim didn't look professional because it obviously did not look like the actors were on a bus because of the surroundings.
For our film, we planned out locations for us to film. This is so that our film would look professional and so that it would go with out film plot. In thriller films it is mainly filmed in large cities so we decided to film in Kings Cross which is a well known place in London. However since our plot changed slightly after the pitch and receiving feedback, we did not film at a phone box
We also planned out the props we used for our film. This was a bag that contained the 'bomb'. We used the same bag when filming so that it was consistent Planning what props we used made the film more realistic as we used the same props every time we filmed.
The tables and chairs in the background - prelim wasn't professional as it was not actually filmed on the bus

3. Production -  Mise en scene and Camerawork
When filming for the prelim  there was a limitation of what we could do with the mise-en-scene. We had to film with the clothes that we were already wearing to college as there was no time for us to change into different costumes. This could be a limitation if the plot or genre was different however it fitted fine with our prelim as it was set in a normal day. We also didn't consider lighting whilst filming which could be seen while we was editing as it was inconsistent. The camerawork was poor for the prelim as there were shaky shots however it was our first time using it so we only knew the basics of the camera.
Only a few basic shot types were used such as mid shots, over the shoulder and long shots.

For our film opening we did consider lighting and costume. We used ambient lighting and
did not need any added lighting using any equipment. We ensured this by filming
during the day especially in the morning so that we could have good lighting where is was
bright and clear. For costume we decided for the actress to wear normal everyday clothing to make it realistic. When filming, we considered the 180 degree rule which meant staying on one side of a 'virtual line', to orientate the viewers and allow them to understand where the characters are on set. We also used a wide range of shot types and used different techniques like tracking and panning. The shots were more still as we knew our camera skills improved more as we knew how to use the camera and the equipment.

4. Post production
When editing the prelim, we had very basic skills. None of us in the group used any editing software so everything was new to us. The cuts were very simple and we did not know the skills of adding in effects and colour grading. Thus this lacked in our prelim.
Learning from our mistakes and with more practice, we were able to make our final project more accurate and better. We colour graded to fix some lighting issues and also establish a mood that fit well with the thriller genre. We also added in sound which was successful as this made our title sequence more professional. We added a non diegetic soundtrack which also fit in with genre and added dramatic tension. We also had sounds like footsteps and background noises to make it more realistic. The only effect that we added was fading in and out when the shot changed to a credit on a blank screen. This was to make the shots flow better together. Since it's a thriller film, we didn't want any other effects that aren't seen in the conventions of thriller films. As a group we made sure that the title credits were in the right order and we knew this as we had already researched this. We made the credits in After Effects where we were able to add in transitions .

5. Hidden skills
6. Conclusion
As we got to know each other in the group and became friends, we were able to agree on most aspects and we worked well as a team. Through the process I was able to improve my skills such as team work, negotiation and delegation. It was easy to make decisions in the group as we were able to negotiate and share ideas to make each decision and idea better. For example we were all happy with the location of the film because it was close to the college and also fit in well with our film. Everyone in the group contributed and together we planned, filmed and edited. We were all organised and knew what was going on. We didn't need to delegate that much as everyone was happy to do any task so that we could do well. Whilst editing we all contributed by making gestures that could make the opening better which we would agree to. Another skill that improved after going through this experience is my listening skills.
Overall I feel that this project allowed me to feel more confident and be more organised so that I can independently get my work done on time.
In conclusion I feel like our title sequence was successful in each aspect. We managed to complete the project on time and made sure that we followed the guidelines. Through the feedback that we received, it allowed us to make our sequence better. I learned that planning is key. This is because it allowed us to do things without . It's important to plan and research so that you know who your audience is and so you know what to do to fit the conventions of your chosen genre. Time management is also a major factor. This will allow you to get everything done within the time frame so that you are not rushing as this will make your work seem unprofessional and unfinished.
I feel more confident in editing skills as I was able to use Premiere Pro in more detail e.g. adding in effects and titles. I was able to be more creative compared to the prelim where I lacked in editing skills.
If I were to do this project, I would do more planning. This is because it took us some time to find the right font on the After Effects software even though we planned to have another one. Planning is also crucial as it makes the rest of the process smooth easily. I would also be more confident when filming to make the sequence more better. But overall I am happy with how the title sequence came out in the end.
