Should Juvenile offenders be tried and punished as adults?

As many of you may know, a former student at EMHS was charged with the murder of a 14-year-old boy.
Jwan himself is a 16-year-old that is facing up to 65 years in the state prison being placed with adults being charged with murder as well.
Although Jwan should face a penalty for the crime, 65 years in prison with adults is a harsh penalty. Jwan is not allowed parole, and has no chance of getting out of prison any time sooner than 65 years.

bACKGROUND INFORMATION
This topic is an important topic in today's society because in today's world, kids believe that it is "cool" to get in trouble and do bad things. In all reality, what you do today and tomorrow will effect your life forever.
In our every day life, there are people our age being tried as adults in prison. This is an important topic because when children are sentenced to prison, they become a main target for inmates to sexually abuse, physically abuse, and mentally abuse.
kids in our school are being arrested and going to jail all the time. And just because they do get arrested, doesn't mean that they will be sentenced to prison, but it just means that they are on the path to prison, they are on the path of becoming repeated offenders. This is our society and it is down the wrong path.

my position
In my opinion, Juvenile offenders should not be tried and punished as adults. If a child is tried as an adult, and is sentenced to prison, then that child will not know what it is like to grow up, get a drivers license, or even have kids and get married.

Support evidence
Policies that send youth to the adult criminal system are counter productive for the purpose of reducing violence and enhancing public safety.
Youth are targets for sexual and physical assault.
Juveniles go to isolation in some prisons causing anxiety, paranoia, exacerbate existing mental disorders, and increase the risk of suicide.
The 1% of the youth that make up prisons are 19 times more likely to commit suicide in jail than youth in general population and 36 times more likely to commit suicide in adult jail than in a detention facility.
Sending a child to an adult jail is a very high risk to the youth.

Support Evidence Cont.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that when a juvenile offender commits a heinous crime, the state can exact forfeit of some of the basic liberties, but the state cannot extinguish his life and his potential to attain a mature understanding of his own humanity.
Scientist's at Harvard Medical School have found that the pre-frontal cortex, the part of your brain that is responsible for decision, is the last part of your brain to develop.(17 years old)
Youth under 18 should not be put to the death penalty, but they should be punished for their crime and be given the tools to rehabilitate.

COUNTERARGUMENT
The biggest argument for juvenile offenders is that they did the crime, so they should do the time. If anyone commits a crime then they should be punished for it. Whether the age, race, sexuality, religion, or any other discrimination cause.
If a child commits the same crime as an adult then they should be punished the same and shouldn't get a different treatment just because of their age.
Regardless of the age, the youth should have to learn their lesson.

Evidence
Many children are abused, neglected, domestic, and community violence and poverty throughout their life. Without help, these children engage into destructive and violent behavior as they cannot manage the emotional, social, and physiological behavior.
When the youth are released from prison after serving their sentence, they would have been in prison since they were adolescents and will need help learning basic life skills.

Conclu-sion
Yes juveniles have commited a crime that would lead them to be placed in prison, but prison for a minor only leads to worse behavior and penalties.
Juveniles that are placed with adults are abused, raped, and emotionally disturbed.
Juvenile offenders should not be tried and punished as adults do because their pre-frontal cortex does not fully develop until the age of 17.
