Analysis Of The Codes And Conventions Of The Hot Fuzz Opening.
Soundtrack.
You can hear the sound of his shoes once he reaches the Long Shot to, build up more suspense for his reveal. The message of professionalism is added to by the voice reading out a list of multiple distinctions and achievements that he has achieved. The shot of Angels Commendation is another example of how the camera is coupled with the narrator to demonstrate just how important these are. The music throughout is upbeat, despite the serious nature the character tries to give off, this shows how it’s a comedy and not as serious as the viewers believe. Sirens form a sound bridge between the ident of Working Title and the establishing shot, the soundtrack at the very start consists of only the thuds of sergeant angel’s footsteps.
Editing.
A lot of jump cuts are used in the opening scene but the scenes still seem natural because similar shots are used in different scenes. Also, most of the costumes are similar and this makes the scenes flow together. Mainly continuity editing is used, lots of scenes are cut together giving the feel of an action film however the facial expressions and scenarios start to hint that the film is a comedy. The editing is non-linear. There is a lot of shots of him walking towards the office and shots of his previous life with the voice over describing them.
Codes And Conventions.
The codes and conventions of the Hot Fuzz opening are quite different to a lot of other films, the genre of Hot Fuzz is a police comedy, and there are features throughout the whole opening that show this too the audience, for example the first use of a comedy technique is when Angel is saying his list of skills and after a list of very impressive things such as "Advanced Driving" he says "Advanced Cycling" and he is a full latex suit to add comedy. There are also aspects of action, such as when he is talking about his past and then there is a scene showing him training in riots and there is a lot of hard cuts which build a lot of tension.
Camera Angles.
In the opening a lot of different camera angles are used, for example there is a low angle shot of Sargent Angels pristine shoes, of him walking to the office where he has been called to, the low angle shot of his shoes show that pace and purpose he is walking with. Another angle used in the opening is a center shot when Sargent Angel has finished his written exam and he clicks his pen, this shows that he is the center character or the protagonist. In contrast to the start of opening the rest of the opening is filled with hard cuts which builds tension.
Camera Movements.
An array of camera movements are used in the hot fuzz opening, for example there is a tracking shot used when Angel is walking up the stairs and this shows the pace at which he is walking it also shows that he is moving with purpose. There is a slow zoom at the start of Angel walking in and this builds tension to reveal who he is, Angel walks in from very far away and this compliments the suspense building reveal. There is another tracking shot when Angel is driving his car in his advanced training the shot follows the car while it skids round the corner and this emphasizes how fast he is going.
Mise-En-Scene.
The opening is set in London, this Links in with the costume as the office department shows the police officers dressed formally in their uniform. Angel's costume changes when he is part of the riot squad and in the gym. Angel is always shown in the middle or in the most light and this shows that he is of most importance. The props used in this opening also compliment the genre of the film, for example when Angel shows his police badge which has a photo of him with a very stern face and this shows that he is very serious about his job, another prop used is the riot shields that the police officers use when in the riot simulation.

Shot Type.
A lot of different shot types are used in the opening of Hot Fuzz, for example there is an extreme close up on Angels police badge to show the audience that this is a police film. The close up of the badge tells the viewer who he is.  A mid shot is used here to show the character entering the office which was most likely his destination the whole time. It also shows how he’s kept his formal composure the whole time, this shot aso shows him knocking on the door which shows his politeness. The shot before showed Angel being wounded, with a close up of a knife through his hand and showing this before the office scene also bring relevance to the scene because his hand is mentioned three times.
Credits.
The credits used in the opening show the different company's that have helped make this film, for example the first credit that is show when he is walking from the door is "Universal Pictures Presents" and this shows the organisation that presents this film and Universal is one of the big 6. It also shows the company they are in association with "StudioCanal". The next credit is the most important one and that is the production company which is "Working Title" and this shows the audience that the film is made in England and doesn't have a huge budget and it then shows that Working Title is association with "Big Talk Productions".
Actors.
The actors shown mainly in the opening are, Simon Pegg as Nicholas Angel, Martin Freeman as the Met Sargent, Steve Coogan as the Inspector, and Bill Nighy as the chief inspector. Simon Pegg is the protagonist in this opening and the other three actors who have speaking roles in this opening all have a similar role and that is to try and convince Angel to stand down and work somewhere else, the met Sargent and the inspector both question Angel if they would like to take this issue to a higher member of staff and ultimately they all say the same things and the use of repetition is used when all the other police workers ask "Hows The Hand?" and this starts to show a comedy feel.
