Collaroy-Narrabeen Coastal Protection Works
Having this management strategy is important so we can protect roads, buildings and homes from extreme weather conditions
Severe storms have damaged properties and have caused severe erosion, which also causes damage to private and public properties including sewer lines, roads and stormwater assets.
Purpose of this management strategy
- Sandbags are placed, they last up to 6 months
- Rocks are placed along the coast to break down wave energy that hits the shore
- Dune management, using fences and vegetation
- Sand replenishment and beach nourishment
description
Erosion can result in a loss of habitat, and salinisation of soils ( increase of salt in soil) may cause changes in the distribution of plants and animals. There is also a loss of infertile land and can lead to an increase in pollution in streams and rivers which can lead to blockage of waterways. Erosion can worsen flooding as well.
Impacts on the environment
It is a sort of success, with sand replenishment and beach nourishment reducing coastal erosion. Seawalls along the beach also lessening coastal erosion.
Although, it is still very vulnerable to coastal storms.
