Most citizens in Rwanda and Burundi are Christians. Yet, they still have their own ancient beliefs, which include of a distant creator called Imaana. This god has the power to grant wealth and fertility to all people. The king shares in this power, which can be seen in his sacred fire, royal drums, and rituals. The spirits of one’s dead relatives carry messages between Imaana and the human world, which they called the abazima. They granted bad luck to those who do not respect them, in which people offered gifts to protect themselves. Another solution was to try and learn the spirits' wishes by listening to fortune-tellers
Tutsi folklore includes of poetry, proverbs, folk tales, riddles, and myths, mainly portraying to the God worshipped by the tribe. They used these legends to get points across, and since they are tradition, must be passed along generations.
