Foot binding
When did Foot binding commence?
Foot Binding commenced in the tenth centuary in Ancient China because the prince loved the small feet of his concubine.
why was foot binding being practised?
Foot binding was being practised becasue the Prince Li Lu loved the small feet of his concubine. Prince Li Lu made it that at the age of 3 you will start to get you feet binded to become what they called "lilly feet".
How where feet bound
Feet where bound by first washing the feet in warm water and then massaging their feet. The child's toes where turned under and pressed against the bottom of there feet. The arches where broken as the foot was pulled straight with their leg. A long cotton bandage would be tightly wound around the ankle to hold the toes in place. The bandages would stay on the childs feet from the age of 3 to 11.
how where the women affected
The women were affected by:
1. Not being able to walk very far without assistants
2. Having to work on there knees when in the kitchen.
3. Not being able to get married if the had "big ugly feet"
4. When the toes are bent the can fall off due to the lack of blood getting to the toes
what are lotus shoes
Lotus shoes where 3 inches big and made with silk and were beautifully embroidered.
why did some women not have their foot bound?
Some women didn't get their feet bound when they were young because they were peasants or from the working class. They didn't get them bound because it was necesary for them to be able to walk.
Summarise Apho's story in 3-5 sentences
AhPo had 7 children and she cooked, cleaned and she had those doll sized feet. She wore small balck leather shoes some were laced and some had a narrow strap around the step. AhPo normally had swollen knees from kneeling around the house.
