The Shining Bicycle Scene
This scene from The Shining starts with a high pitch screeching sound which is non-diegetic. This is done in order to suggest that he will encounter something on his ride around the hotel. The camera tracks his movement from a distance. The extra long shot allows the audience to see that he has gone through the kitchen of the hotel. This suggests that his family is in some power in the hotel. This is because he is biking around the premises in areas where he shouldn't be. As we see him turn right, the camera still looks down the corridor, maybe suggesting that someone is following him.
An over the shoulder shot/long shot is used to present the boy roaming the corridors of the hotel. The camera still tracks his movement of the boy, this time at a faster pace in order to show how quickly he is travelling. This contrasts with the previous shot where slow tracking made it appear that he is moving at a slow pace. As the camera pans to the left as he turns, the non-diegetic sound of symbols indicate the sudden appearance of the two girls standing at the opposite end of the corridor. The entrance of the symbols aren't in sync with the appearance of the girls. This is done in order to let the audience acknowledge that something bad will occur. The same over the shoulder shot shows two young girls in baby blue dresses.
Fast paced editing is used to show quick glimpses of the bloodshed which resulted in the girls' death. This is done to show that the boy knows what had happened to them in the past as they are ghosts. The non-diegetic sound increases in volume once the shot of the dead twins arise. The axe on the floor in this shot shows that they were butchered down. After each shot showing how they were murdered the camera moves from an extra long shot to a long shot to a medium close up. This is done to emphasise the fact that the girls insist on him playing with them. This elicits a response of shock from the young boy with his eyes widening and his mouth open indicating this through the use of shot reverse shot. The medium close up of the girls show them holding hands, suggesting they had a close relationship with each other. Furthermore, it can suggest unity as they had stuck by each other from birth till death.
A close up shows the boy having his hands over his face suggesting that he is frightened of what he saw. To ensure that he was not imagining things, he slowly widens the gaps between his finger to see. A point of view shot/ extra long shot shows an empty corridor. Shot reverse shot is used between his face and his perspective of the situation. Removing his hands from his face suggests that he is brave enough to encounter scary situations. However, his facial expressions shows he is scared. He uses his imaginations to talk to his finger friend as a source of comfort.
