Evaluation
By Millie, Max and Jono
I worked with Jono, Evan, Max and Millie. We managed the task well between us, Jono was in charge of finding locations for filming and props. Evan was one of the lead rappers within the video and he was in charge of the evaluation questions. He had to delegate questions to other people within the group and he had to make sure they got done. Millie was director, when filming the video Millie had to make sure the Mise en scene was perfect, the camera angle was right and make sure everyone was in the right position and doing the right thing. Max was one of the rappers within the video and he was in charge of editing. He had to make the editing look identical to Man don’t care, he then had to render the video and then upload it onto YouTube.
We planned are sequence on a story board. We storyboarded the first 45 seconds of man don’t care and then we used it as much as we could when filming are prelim. It did come helpful but we used the official video more than we used the storyboard. We also used a filming schedule so we could see when people were available to film and then worked around that. I feel like this really organised our group. We also had a prop list, this let us know what we had borrowed and what we had given back. Again I felt like this really organised us as a group.
When planning, shooting and editing we had to take a variety of factors into account. We had to ensure that we thoroughly planned everything, which lead to us knowing exactly what we were doing and when. This left us comfortable and satisfied with the amount of work we had due and timings. When planning we had ensure that the shooting schedule was completed with detail and the correct information of timings and shots that we needed. This means that when we film we will be able to complete them to a good standard. The main intention for our group was to make sure that the shots matched up as much as possible to the video. We had to make sure that the effects, cuts and transitions were as identical as possible. We needed to make sure that the shooting locations were available at the times we were able to film. This meant the group had to book locations in advance and it allowed us to stay on top of the schedule and we kept up to date with our work. As a group we was organised and precise.
Our music video copy came out better than expected and was almost an exact copy to the original. We tried our best to get everyone to do the correct poses and actions in order to fit the right role in the video. Not only did we do this but we also made sure everyone had brought in the right costume (mostly black clothes) to also match the characters. The beginning part of our music video is my personal favourite as we were able to put 7 different people and make them 18 instead, due to editing. We also changed their costumes so that it was hard to notice that they were in fact the same person as before. In hindsight I would make sure we gave ourselves a lot more time that we did. We underestimated how long it would take us to film and due to it taking us to long it then meant our time slot was quickly deteriorating.
Others really liked our editing in the video and said it was hard to tell it was editing and could not tell that the same people were used as different people at all. However they were unsure of the song as 'rap' is not the most popular genre or well liked. However it was meant to be a challenge and that was what myself and my group thought would be a great opportunity in order to push ourselves.
From doing this prelim task i have learnt that it is a key feature to pick your song as quick as possible so that you can start preparing straight away. Unfortunately for my group it took us a long time to choose what we wanted to do as we had so many choices, we found that people had already decided what they wanted to do way before we had. This then gave us less time to prepare and made it so we had to rush at some parts. Also we underestimated the time it would take to film. We didn't realize how difficult it was and how many takes we would have to shoot. We went in thinking it would be like the opening to a film which is what we did last year, however it wasn't and we soon found out. Giving our self an hour to film a few scenes ended up going so quickly and we managed to only film one. This was because we did not realize how hard it really was and how much preparation we needed before filming. This has been a significant learning point for when it comes to our real music video as we will now be so much more prepared and know that we need to give our self a lot of time for preparation in order to help in the long run. We will need to make sure that everyone has learnt all the lines to the song so that there will be no chance in them forgetting them causing the process to take longer. Lastly we know to give our self plenty of time to film, much more than an hour as we have to be prepared to film lots of different takes and cuts.
The comparisons with filming an opening to a film and filming a music video is very slim. They are both complete opposites, however i find filming a music video slightly more difficult due to you having to learn all the words and also get the timings correct to. Any slight part that might go off will ruin the whole effect and show that it is fake. Unlike with making a film opening as all you needed to do was talk from a script and did not have to mime in order to sync anything. Music videos are a lot more static compared to film openings so we were always having to stop the recording, re-position the camera and carry on filming somewhere else.
Music videos are full of all kinds of different cuts which makes the overall editing process very difficult and possibly challenging. Although we no longer have to add any titles in, which were a must in the opening to a film. In the opening to a film there were no worries on having to get the timings right as there were no set timings, so things could easily be done in one to two takes. This is quite the opposite with the music videos as it may take up to five different takes in order to get the perfect shot. Not only are people having to mime but also have to copy the movements of the original video exactly. It takes a lot of focus and hard work. Also dancing and miming to a rap video takes a lot of confidence to perform this in front of people as most of our group have never done anything like this before.
As a group member my strengths were that i was able to successfully contribute a wide range of interesting a fun ideas which could easily be adapted in order to fit with the music video. I was able to help pick out who would be the best face to represent a rapper, i found that Max, Evan and Tez fit the role perfectly and were able to adapt to the rap and slightly 'chav' style. Due to me being quite a girly girl i soon realized that although i really wanted to be in it, it would look strange and not match at all. My look and personality could not match up to a rapper. So due to this the decision was to stick with the boys as they gave a more professional and serious look to the video. They were able to quickly pick up the lyrics as they usually listen to all kinds of rap videos so are able to learn them quicker than i did. My weaknesses were my absences as i was unable to be there for a few of the filming days due to having to help out with prefect duties. This caused a strain on everyone's behalf as they desperately needed everyone from our group to be there and help. Despite not being there i was able to contact my peers and still help them and give them my ideas through text / call. As a group we all worked really well and got along with each other and managed to avoid any kinds of arguments. My peers were not the usual people i had worked with so it was nice to have a different kind of atmosphere and all different ideas. They were all really hard working and so dedicated to getting this music video finished.
After looking at a few i found that i really enjoyed Olly Looms group as i noticed straight away that every single member of their group was putting in 100% of their effort into making the video believable and look really good. They chose to do a One direction song and each boy they chose to represent each character was perfectly decided and matched them exactly. Rory played Harry and Joe was playing Nial, they both did a noticeably great job of miming and getting the movements exactly the same as the video. They tried to accurately get the settings correct as were in the video as much as they could without using a green screen, however they found that some scenes they had no choice but to use it.
