  • Jimmu ascended to the throne in 660 B.C.E.
Jimmu is known as the first emperor who was descended by the sun goddess
Prince Shotoku
  • Prince Shotoku was a regent for his aunt, Empress Suiko, and greatly helped Japan develop
  • He built several temples, established the Seventeen Article Constitution, created the twelve official ranks of court, and brought the influence of China to Japan
  • His real name is Prince Umayado, which literally means "Prince of the Stable Door", due to the fact that he was actually born on the doorstep of a stable, in 574
  • The prince lived until 622.
  • The temples that he built were some of the first temples built in Japan

Chinese Influence in Japan
  • When the two civilizations first met, there was no written Japanese language
  • The Japanese adopted the Chinese language and over the centuries changed
  • There is a large interest in the Buddhist religion still today, which came from China
  • Japanese Emperors developed the Chinese Bureaucracy in their government
  • Architects started designing buildings that were originated from China 
  • The world of music was heavily influenced by China
  • Although the kimono was thought to be the creation of Japan, it was actually created by the Chinese in the Han Dynasty
  • The first form of their constitution was influenced by the Chinese approach to a more centralized and organized government
  • The practice of calligraphy as an art medium also came to Japan from China

1185-1600 CE



  •  In 1185 C.E., a powerful aristocrat by the name of Yoritomo Minamoto became ruler
  •  He founded Japan's first military government

  •    He provided his vassals with protection
  •  Yoritomo had liquidated several of his brothers and other close relatives
  • Yoritomo established his new warrior regime at Kamakura

Kamakura Shogunate
  • The Kamakura Shogunate was a Japanese Feudal military government
  • This period draws its name from the capital
  • The Kamakura Shogunate ended when Ashikaga Takauji took the position of shogun to himself
  • The Minamoto family ruled the Kamakura Shogunate
  • When Yoritomo Minamoto passed away, the Hojo held the real power, but the Minamoto family were the titular shoguns
  • The emperor attempted to reverse this situation, but failed in a 1221 rebellion
  • In 1331, a second attempt was made, and finally the Kamakura Shogunate lost power to Ashikaga

  • The Ashikaga Shogunate was a weak ruling institution, unlike the Kamakura Shogunate
  • Takauji was obliged to give away much land and relinquish extensive governing rights
  • Takauji had to kill his younger brother, Tadayoshi, which led to dark days near the end of his life
  • Takauji in particular came to be known as the most heinous person in Japanese history
  • Ashikaga Takauji was a warrior and a statesman who founded the Ashikaga Shogunate
  • The Ashikaga family became one of the most powerful in Japan during the Kamakura period
  • Takauji was a highly cultured man who composed waka (31-syllable poems) and renga (linked verse) during his free time

  •   After the death of Nobunaga in 1582, his top general, Hideyoshi, became the ruler of Japan
  •    He was able to force all of the Daimyos to swear loyalty to him 
  •   He controlled all the day to day business of the nation
  • One of the laws was to ban all weapons and prevented them from being made
  •   He enforced a number of new laws to prevent rebellion from peasants

  •  Ieyasu was the founder and the first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate
  •    He was an extremely cautious man and did not want to fail like those before him
  •  He nationalized most of the important cities, including Kyoto
  • Ieyasu became convinced that Christianity should be banned
  •   Ieyasu was immensely rich!!!!!!!!!!

Tokugawa Shogunate
  • Life in Tokugawa Japan was peaceful but heavily controlled by the shogunal government
  • After a century of chaotic warfare, the Tokugawa peace was much needed
  • All sectors of society were confined to their traditional roles much more strictly than in the past 
  • Japanese Christians were exiled, and Christianity faded from the country 
  • The peaceful state that Japan was living in ended when Matthew Perry and his black ships arrived
  • The black ships were only the start of the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate
  •  The sudden influx of people began to destroy Japan
  • After 250 years of peace and isolation, Japan turned into the modern world today 
  • Power, the need for influence of will
