Definition of "Computer"
Computer Devices
The earliest "computer-like" device that we know of is the Atikythera Mechanism, the purpose of it is unkown.
The first mechanical computation device was invisioned by Charles Babbage in 1822
In 1837 he proposed the "Analytical Engine", the first general mechanical computer
Its features included: Arithmetic Logic Unit, basic flow control and integrated memory
It was never built while he was alive but his youngest son, Henry, was able to build a portion of the machine and perform basic mathematical calculations
Computer Devices
The first programmable (using binary) computer was developed by Konrad Zuse in his parent's living room in around 1937.
It is considered to be the first electro-mechanical binary programmable computer, or the first "modern" computer.
The first electronic computer was the Colossus, developed during WWII to help the British and allies decode encrypted Axis messages.
The Atanasoff-Berry Computer was the first digital computer. Its development began in 1937 and continued until 1942. This machine was only about the size of a large shopping cart.
ENIAC was a secret WWII project that stood for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer. It covered 1800 square feet.
Although ABC is the first digital computer many still consider ENIAC the first digital computer because it was fully operational.
Computer Devices
EDSAC (Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator) was an early british computer that performed its first successful calculation in 1949, and was also the first computer to store and run a program AND was the first computer to run a graphical computer game nicknamed "baby".
In 1944 Konrad Zuse began working on the Z4, the first commercial computer. It was sold to Eduard Stiefel, a Swedish mathematician, in 1950.
The first RAM (Random Access Memory) using computer was the "whirlwind machine". This advancement is what has made many of our modern computers possible.
In 1968 HP (Hewlett Packard) began marketing the first mass-market computer desktop the HP 9100A.
The first micro processor was the Intel 4004 introduced in 1971.
Computer Devices
The first PC was the Kenbak-1 which was operated with a series of buttons and lights for inputting and outputting data.
The first "laptop" or portable computer was the IBM 5100, released in 1975, it weighed 55 pounds and had a 5 inch CRT display.
The first truly portable laptop computer was the Osborne 1 released by Adam Osborne in 1981. It weighed 24.5 pounds and also had a 5 inch display.
Apple's first computer was the Apple I but to use it, you needed separately sold peripherals like a monitor, keyboard, etc.
From this point on computers began focusing on getting more power into a smaller size.
