What is Pi Number?
The ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter is known as the pi number. Basically any natural phenomenon associated with the circle inevitably includes this constant as well. However, pi also appears in places less associated with the circle. For example, equations describing the movement of a pendulum, the vibration of a string, or the winding patterns of a river also have pi.
Attach a weight to the end of a string with a length of one quarter of the gravitational acceleration (g) (i.e. 245cm) and swing it, and it will take pi seconds for the pendulum to make one full swing. Here T is the period in seconds, L is the length of the pendulum, and g is the gravitational acceleration of approximately 9.8 m/s². If we take L=g/4, all terms are simplified (do it yourself) and we get pi seconds. (Period is the time it takes for the pendulum to make one full swing.)
This symbol originally did not represent a number. It was the first letter of the Greek word “περίμετρον” meaning environment, just like our three letters for the environment. However, it was well known at that time as a special number. The symbol for the number Pi was introduced in 1706 by a mathematician named William Jones.
How Many Digits Do We Know?
In theory, you can simply calculate pi by drawing a perfect circle and measuring it carefully. In reality, we should have formulas that calculate as many decimal places as possible. Chudnovsky algorithm is one of them.
World Pi Day is Also World Mathematics Day
Pi day is specially accepted in the world to commemorate the famous mathematical constant pi and is celebrated on 14 March every year. The reason why Pi day is celebrated on March 14 is that this day is 3/14 in the American date format. (March 14).
