(fertility awareness)
- How does it work ?
- It is a behavioral birth control method. When you track your previous mentrual cycle and predict your ovulation dates you can then abstain from sex druing your most fertile days.
- How effective is it ?
- The effectiveness of this more depends on the person, on average it is only about 76% effective at precenting pregnancy.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of it ?
- An advantage of this is there is no chemical being injected into your system, it is a natural form of birth control.
- A disadvantage is the effectiveness of it. A women uses predictions and calenders to then use to abstain from sex or use other forms of control such as a condom.
- How does it work ?
- It is when a person does not have sex or engage in any sexual interactions.
- How effective is it ?
- Abstinence is the only form of birht control that is 100 percent effective.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of it ?
- The advantage of it is that you have no chance of getting STDs or anything that can be secual transmitted.
- One of the only disadvantage is that some people may find it difficult to abstain a long time.
Abstinence
- How does it work ?
- It is a combination of etrogen and progestin that prevent pregnance by stopping the release of the LH and FSH from the pituitary gland.
- How effective is it ?
- The pill is around 91% effective. Only 9 in 100 women will get pregnant.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of it ?
- Advantages are that it can regulate your period and reduce PMS symptoms.
- Disadvantages include having to take it everyday around the same time. It also has temporary side effects and can cause increased blood pressure.
Oral Contraceptives
Diaphragm
- How does it work ?
- A cap is used as a barrier in the vagina. The cap prevents the male's sperm from entering the cervix.
- How effective is it ?
- The diaphragm contreceptive is only around 92-96 percent effective.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of it ?
- The disatvanges are that you have to keep the cap in place for atleast 6 hours after sex. This does not protect you from STDs. You should also use this with a spermicide.
- Advantages are that it has no health risks.
Depo Provera
- How does it work?
- It is a form of birth control in a shot from. It contains the hormone progestin to prevent ovulation and makes the mucus in the cervix thicker.
- How effective is it ?
- It is 99% effective, only 1 in 100 woman get pregnant when getting the shot every three months. When not getting the shot on time brings the effectiveness down to 94%.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of it ?
- Disadvantages is that you need the shot every three months and there can be negative side effects as well.
- Advantages are that you can have sex without remebering every time for contraceptives. It can also help prevent some cancers.
- How does it work ?
- Norplant acts as a contraceptive by thickening the cervical mucus so that sperm cannot get through to any eggs and also by preventing the release of eggs.
- How effective is it ?
- It is said to have a 99% effectiveness.
- What are the disadvantages of it and why is it not used anymore?
- There are many serious effects. It was removed from the market when women complained about irregular and painful periods.
Norplant
Spermicide/Contraceptive Sponge
- How does it work ?
- The sponge covers your cervix and contains spermicide to help prevent pregnancy. You insert the sponge into the vagina.
- How effective is it ?
- If you have not given birth and use the sponge correctly than it is 91% effective, if you have given birth than it is only 80% effective.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of it ?
- You can buy the sponges and do not need a doctor to get one.The sponge is hormone-free option.
- The disadvantages about this is you have to use one everytime you have sex and have to use it correct each time. The spermacide can also have side effects
Birth Control Patch - Xulane
- How does it work ?
- The birth control patch prevents pregnancy by stopping sperm from joining with an egg .
- How effective is it ?
- It i only about 91% effective.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of it ?
- It can lessen acne, cysts, and other infections on your ovaries.
- The disadvantages is that it requires a prescription and to be effective you have to change it on time.
Condom Male, Female
- How does it work ?
- Condoms work by keeping semen from entering the vagina.
- How effective is it ?
- Male condoms are 85% effective and female condoms are 79% effective.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of it ?
- Advantages include protection from STDs and you can easily get it at a drug store.
- Disadvantages are that it is not the best form of protection and has a small effectiveness percentage. And it is made from latex and some people are allergic.
Sterilization
(male and female)
- How does it work ?
- This prevents the egg from moving down the fallopian tube and keeps the sperm from reaching the egg.
- In a vasectomy, the vas deferens tubes are tied, cut, clipped, or sealed to prevent the release of sperm into the semen.
- How effective is it ?
- Both have a high effectiveness of 99%, after one year the males sterilization effectiveness is higher that the females.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of it ?
- Both disadvantages include the procedure of which the sterilization.
- Advantages are the rate of effectiveness.
