10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU
This is similar to the plot we want to follow in our music video as we too want to show the idea of getting to know what someone is really like and how they are different to the way they act in school.
In the film, Bianca Stratford can only date when her sister Kat does. As a result, Kat is set up with the Patrick who she does not get on with. As the film progresses, Kat discovers that Patrick is not at all who she though he was, discovering his true personality is completely different to the one he shows at school.
THE GOLDBERGS
This TV programme focuses on the Goldberg family. The oldest son, Barry is ''not cool'' and definitely not popular. Barry has a crush on his sister Erica's friend Lainey, who is far more popular than he is, hanging out with the 'in' crowd. In one episode, Lainey finally agrees to date Barry, however, she attempts to keep their relationship a secret, not wanting anything to do with him at school, almost as though she is embarrassed by him. One day Lainey decides she no longer cares about what people will say about her relationship with Barry, telling the school and her friends the truth.
Our idea for our music video is similar to this as we are creating two characters for the girl, the way she acts differently when interacting with her boyfriend both in private and in public. Another similarity is the difference in social groups between the girl and her boyfriend. The biggest difference between this and our narrative is the way in which the couple know each other as in our story they live across the road/ next door to each other while in 'The Goldbergs' Lainey is Barry's sister Erica's friend.
PAPER TOWNS
In this book and film, the two main characters, Margo and Quentin, are childhood friends, living across the road from each other. As they grew their friendship began to disintegrate, at school they are in different social crowds, with very different friends. One day Margo decides to take a spontaneous trip through Quentin's window. When Margo suddenly disappears, Quentin realises his feelings towards her extend further than friendship.
This is similar to our concept because the couple live across the road/ next door to each other. One difference is that the two main characters have the same feelings about one and other.
GEEK CHARMING
This film is about two people, Dylan and Josh, who come from very different worlds. Dylan is a popular girl who looks like she has the perfect life, while Josh is the geek behind the camera. Josh wants to make a film about Dylan and through this the two get to know each other really well., however, Dylan's friends make fun of people like Josh and Dylan lets it happen, blanking him at school As they grow closer, Josh can see what is behind the persona Dylan puts on at school.
This is similar to the narrative for our music video because like Josh and Dylan, the two characters are presented initially as very different, particularly at school where the girl wont even acknowledge the boy. It is also similar because only the boy gets to know what the girl is really like, helping her to want to share this with people at school
GREASE
Despite having a good relationship over the summer, Danny and Sandy end it when they are set to return to school. At the start of the year Sandy has transferred to the school that Danny attends, however, they are in different social groups. Both try to change who they are to be a person they think the other will like.
The similarity between this and our plot is the idea of the different social groups at school and the idea that the personas they show at school are different to each other, so much so that they have completely different friends.
CLUELESS
In Clueless, the new girl Tai starts talking to Travis the skaterboy. Cher, the school's popular, clever girl takes Tai under her wing, warning her off of Travis as she feels he is not worthy of her. Tai begins to change, becoming someone she isn't, forgetting her interests, becoming increasinly concerned with her growing popularity. In the end, Cher realises that she should not be dictating who Tai has a relationship with, Tai comes to her sense, going back to the person she used to be and is happy in with her relationship with Travis.
We can link this to our narrative because the girl in our video is warned off of the boy she is in a secret relationship with by her friends. The friends, like Cher and Dionne, disapprove of this boy, thinking that they all deserve much better. Unlike this film, where Cher only does what she did as she thought it was helpful, the friends are disrespectful and rude, and even make fun of the boy.
MEAN GIRLS
In this film, Cady Heron moves to a new school where initially she makes some unpopular new friends. She is soon invited to join The Plastics, the schools popular, but extremely mean girls. Soon Cady becomes a person she doesn't even recognise, leaving her old friends behind, doing things she never thought she'd do, just to stay popular.
This relates to the narrative in our music video because the girl becomes so concerned with her popularity and social status that she even ignores her own boyfriend because he is not cool enough for her to be seen hanging out with and when they do hang out, it is in a private location which no-one else knows about.
