Evaluation Q5 How did you attract/address your audience?
Contents Page
Naomi Wolf's Beauty Myth - 1990 then 2002
I think that the image of my band 'the franks' at the bottom of the contents page supports the beauty myth however not intentionally. This image is not on the front cover so it's not an initial image the audience will see when they're deciding wether to by the magazine or if it catches their eye as they're passing by. I think it supports the myth as the photo is almost a full length long shot of their bodys whereas on my front cover the image was a medium shot edging towards a close up. Because it is a medium shot the women's slim body shapes can be seen which contributes to the fact that they're an ideal shape and women wish to look like that. When teamed with the image on the front cover which clearly shows attractive faces and good use of cosmetics, the band are portrayed as desirable which imitates Naomi Wolf's beauty myth.
With regards to the image of 'Lilly Evans' she is again, an attractive woman who fits the beauty myth theory as her beauty may entice people flicking through the magazine to read the article about her by attracting their attention.
Trevor Millum
Trevor Millum's theory is part of the 'male gaze.' He describes this as how men view women, how women view other women and how women view themselves. His theory includes 5 ways in which he believes women can be viewed; seductive, carefree, practical, comical and catalogue.
I think that on my contents page, both images that were taken during my photoshoot (not the two live concert images on the left) can be viewed in a carefree way. Some may think seductive if they are highly attracted to the women however I don't think the music genre of magazine holds that purpose in terms of reading material. I think the images would appear carefree because the women that are featured are not models, appearing in magazines is not their job; it's to create and perform music. They're in the magazine to discuss and promote their music not their appearance therefore there was no attempt to emphasise any part of their appearance which is not natural or comfortable. Because of this I think that the image is carefree and does support this aspect of Millum's theory, the featured females are enjoying what they do not trying to be models however this would still be hugely attractive to my audience who are intrigued in their occupation.
Interactivity - Uses and Gratifications component.
I have included a website in the subscription advert in my article which increases the possible ways that the audience can be involved in my magazine brand. The interactivity levels can increase which may increase brand loyalty and ownership from my audience.
This website, as well as providing the cheaper subscription link, could also be home to exclusive content, downloads and podcasts to intrigue the audience on platforms further than the magazine.
