Question 7
Looking back at the preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to full product?
Front Page
When comparing my prelim task to my final piece there is clearly a big difference. While making my school magazine I came across things that I shouldn't do when it came to my music magazine, firstly is the main image, I learnt that it is easier to build up the front cover with all the tags if the photo is a mid shot of the model and not an over the shoulder shot. I also learnt how to make better uses of splashes. My school magazine has a large red splash that takes up almost half the page, I learnt the minimalist is key and it helped me get much more information in a balanced way without making the front cover too cluttered.

Advert and contents
The contents page that I made during my prelim task is very similar to the contents page that I have used on my music magazine, I was very happy with my school magazine as it felt very professional. The biggest difference between these two is the advert. I put a lot more thought into the advert for my music magazine and learnt that the better adverts are primarily graphics based and not based on a photo,
Mastheads
Looking back on my mastheads it is clear to see that they are two very different styles. However, despite this I think they are both fitting for their purpose. For the School magazine the word 'VOICE' is written in an serif font which if often sound in a classroom environment and is considered a traditional and old fashioned style of font. VOICE magazine has a bold red mast head as red is a colour often seen in a school environment as its used by teachers to mark work. In contrary the font used for 'COVER' magazine is written in a sans serif font. The diagonal cut outs give a modern look that has a classic and edgy feel to it, This is more fitting for this genre of magazine as its purpose if very different to that of a school magazine. I kept the masthead for COVER magazine in black and designed it so that it would look good in any colour, this is so that it is more adaptable to fit a ever changing target market.
Double Page Spread
I feel that my double page spread was my biggest improvement as on my prelim task, due to poor time management I had ran out of time to do what I wanted to do to the page. With my final task i made sure I had allocated myself enough time in order to give myself enough time to create the product that I was happy with. My prelim task looks unprofessional and incredibly cheep. My music magazine has a clear theme throughout. the colour pallet spans the picture and the text. The music magazine looks much less cluttered and messy compared to the the prelim task. minimising the layout has helped improve the overall appearance of the piece and it complements the rest of the magazine.
Images
I didn't really put much time or effort into the pictures of my school magazine, instead I simple walked around the school with my camera and a model and took photos when a shot idea came into my head, because of this there wasn't much coherency between all my pictures which made my magazine feel disjointed. in my school magazine. I also didn't follow the codes and conventions where by the front cover and the main story (i.e. the double page spread) are of the same person. On my music magazine I made sure to plan my images carefully using mood boards so that I could make sure I got the exact photo that I wanted when editing. My shots were all pre-planned so that there is a level of consistency throughout. I kept with the codes and conventions of a music magazine and linked the main article with the front cover.
