Where do the Zuni Indians live?
The Southwest is their cultural region.
Zuni’s live in New Mexico on the Colorado plateau and by the Rio Grande.
The Zuni tribe are Farmers, hunters, gatherers and Herdsman.
 The crops grown by these Indians were corn, beans, sunflower seeds, and squash. 
 The Zuni ate food hunted by the men such as deer, small game, and turkeys. 
 Crops and meat were supplemented with nuts, berries, and fruit like melon. Later they started raising sheep and goats.

 They lived in multi-story adobe houses. 
The houses were made from clay and straw mixed together and then they were baked into hard bricks. 
 The adobe homes were made for one family to live in. The houses usually had several rooms.
 The main figure in the creation myth from the Zuni Indians is “Awonawilona, the maker of all”. The creation myth talks about the long journey from the lowest dark cave to caves of the world to light and life on present earth.

The Zuni tribe speaks their own language known as the Zuni language.

 The Zuni tribe often traded with nomadic tribes from the Southwest.

The weapons at first was an ancient spear throwing weapon called an Atlatl which was a type of spear ‘throwing stick’ used to propel spears or “darts”.

The tribe also used knives for different practical uses and hunting.
 Their clothes included breechcloths, short kilts, made from a long rectangular piece of animal cloth or skin which was worn between their legs and tucked over a belt.
 The traditional headdress worn by men was simple cloth or leather headbands although Zuni dancer’s sometimes wore a painted mask or crowns of feathers.
In 1610, the Spanish founded Sante Fe and put all the Pueblos under their authority and attempted to suppress their religion which led to the Pueblo Revolt {1680-1692} located in New Mexico and Arizona.
 The conflict was a huge success for the Zuni People and Pueblo nation and forced the Spanish to leave Sante Fe!
The Zuni tribe was never forced to leave their home when some other tribes did such as The Trail Of Tears and The Long Walk.
The Ancestors of the Zuni tribe.
Some Ancestors of the Zuni are known as the ancient Cliff Dwellers or the Anazazi. They were excellent stone masons who moved away from these dwellings and started to move towards overhanging cliffs where they could build their houses underneath the cliffs.

Something that was found in all Zuni villages is the underground chamber called a Kiva it is a special sacred building to the people. They have tribal ceremonies and rituals. During the rituals some people wore masks and costumes to impersonate Kachinas.

 Dowa Yalanne was an important part in the development of Zuni settlement patterns as it was the first village where the whole Zuni population gathered into a single settlement.

Today the Zuni Pueblo lives some 35 miles south of Gallup, New Mexico and has a population of about 6,000. Archaeological evidence shows they have lived in this location for about 1,300 years.
