Carol Vernallis
'Carol says that the rules of continuity editing are broken in music videos to draw attention to what is on the screen. Music videos are much more frequently edited and edits such as wipes and special effects draw attention to themselves. The frequency of the editing causes them to stand out and reflect the music, in terms of its beat.
Also, a master shot (base track) is normally used to give the music video a structure. The camera tends to move in time with the music.'

Carol mentions that there isn’t always a balance between narrative and performances in music videos. Music videos tend to be a visual response to the narrative. Also, the narrative isn’t always complete. Music videos don’t always have narrative resolution at the end. They often pose questions in the narrative that are not answered within the video.
Carol Vernallis Ideas in our Music Video
Vernallis' idea of broken continuity editing is reflected in our music video, as in the period of 10 seconds there is about 2-3 costume changes. Other ways that this is reflected in our video is the fast motion of the sparklers, jump cuts and moving to the pace of the music. By making these edits obvious it breaks the convections of continuity editing as it doesn't follow the seamlessness style of continuity.

Another point of Vernallis is that the video being a visual response to the narrative. Our song was mainly about love however it could be interpreted in many ways therefore we decided to have our narrative based on a friendship shared between the artist and her friend, For example, when it says 'i loved you more, when you had no money...' we show the two friends having fun, this illustrates the true meaning of friendship of how the two friends stick together in tough situations.
We were also influenced by her idea of music videos having a theme. Therefore, our theme was about having fun, which we tried to showcase by making it visually creative with the rise-en-scene.

Versailles said how the base track gives the music video structure. In our music video, although we mainly focused on performance over narrative, when the chorus came we would mainly have the artist singing and other verses of the song will have more of the artist with her friend. This meant that every time the chorus came we would go back to some of the same base tracks of the artist singing, therefore it reflected Vernallis' idea of base tracks giving the video some sort of structure.
Andrew Goodwin
'The singer in music videos is usually both the narrator and the character. Also, the singer tends to look directly at the camera; this involves the viewer at with the performance. This is known as the 'singer' breaking the 4th wall. Our artist does this a lot which makes her build a connection with her viewers.

Pop videos are heavy on repetition. They tend to repeat images in the same way the chorus and lines are repeated in the song. Also the repetition in songs of parts or rhythms of other songs (intersexuality) means that we become familiar with the genre and have certain expectations.
