MUSIC MAGAZINES
BY MIRIAM KERSHAW
When looking at the Facebook pages, Instagram accounts and news pages on artists websites for artists similar to Jay Harper such as James Bay, Tom Odell and Hozier, I noticed that many of them featured in the magazines to help promote themselves. This is very useful as it allows them to connect with fans using a different platform as well as the fact that the type of magazine that they feature in can help to classify them as an artist.

As a result of this, I looked at some covers for magazines featuring indie artists to help me understand their star image by looking at how they are presented on the cover.
This is George Ezra's cover for DIY Magazine. DIY Magazine is a music magazine with a focus on indie and alternative artists.
This cover connotes that Ezra is an indie artist because he is seen to be wearing a simple checked shirt, something which is  not very descript.
Moreover, it is clear that this is a cover for an indie magazine and that George Ezra is an indie artist due to the simplicity of the cover. The font is simple and clear in white font and the background is plain blue.
Unlike the covers for some pop magazines, the cover is not littered with other things included in the magazine, making it easy for the reader to focus on Ezra.
Hot Press is another indie music magazine. This cover features Hozier in the centre.
Hozier is clearly an indie artist which is highlighted by his long, messy hair and simple clothing.
Again, the cover is fairly simple and allows the reader to focus on the central artist.
Acoustic is another magazine which focuses on indie artists like James Bay.
From this cover, Bay can be seen as an indie artist as well as an organic one. This is due to his appearance and the use of the guitar. It can be seen that Bay has long hair, something which is also seen with other indie artists. Additionally, his clothing is simple and could be worn everyday, making him seem like an average person with an average dress sense. This is an important part of the star image for an indie artist.
The guitar is used on this cover which is particularly effective because it connotes that James Bay has other talents than just singing, making him an organic artist.
The fact that he is looking dead into the camera is also important as it shows a serious expression on his face, signifying that he is serious about music.
This cover of Hot Press features Paolo Nutini, another indie artist.
From this cover, it can be seen that Nutini is an indie artist due to his simple appearance and the fact that it features a guitar connoting his other qualities.
