Figurative language
By: Samuel Coons
Simile
  • A simile is figurative language that uses like or as to directly compare two unlike things.
  • An example from the text Mrs. Flowers was "... I sopped around the house ... like an old biscuit, dirty and inedible."
  • My own example of a simile is "They bounced around like miniature dolls in a portable doll house."
  • This is how Maya felt about herself, as an inedible biscuit that is just sitting there becoming even more disgusting by the minute.
Metaphor
  • A metaphor is a comparison between two things. Unlike a simile a metaphor does not use like or as.
  • "She was an old photo graph dusted from an album, whitened away..." This is a metaphor from the passage "Summer in a Day" by Ray Bradbury.
  • An example of a metaphor is " Her hair was a filthy, scrappy mop on top of her head."
Personification
  • Personification is figurative language that gives animals and inanimate objects human characteristics and feelings.
  • "... the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully,..." is an example of personification from the poem "On The Pulse Of Morning".
  • "The Yellow Traffic light was feeling  sad when nobody listened to him" is an example of personification.
Hypebole
  • A Hyperbole is an exaggeration or overstatement used for effect.
  • "The sky darkened to midnight in a flash." is a hyperbole from "Summer In A Day" by  Ray Bradbury.
  • "Tim's feet were screaming in agonizing pain until he sat down."
Alliteration
  • alliteration is repeated consonant or vowel sounds at the beginning of words.
  • An example of alliteration from "On The Pulse Of Morning" was"I, the Rock, I the River, I the Tree I am yours..."
  • "A demonic dynamo delivers death - defying dance to a damsel in distress." Is an alliteration.
