The Black Death

The Black Death arrived in Europe by sea in October, 1347
Arrived when 12 Genoese trading ships docked at the Sicilian port of Messina after a long journey through the Black Sea
Most sailors aboard the ships were dead, those who were still alive were gravely ill
The sailors were also covered in mysterious black boils that oozed blood
In the next five years of 1347, the Black Death would kill more than 20 million people in Europe

The French biologist Alexandre Yersin discovered the germ called Yersina pestis, which caused the Black Death to occur
During the 14th century, nobody knew how the Black Death was transmitted to one person to another, according to one doctor.
The modern day people know that a bacillus traveled from person to person through the air, which was the main cause of Yersina pestis
By the middle of 1348, the Black Death had struck Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon, and London

Many people believed that the Black death was a kind of divine punishment-retribution for sins against God
By this logic, the only way to overcome the plague was to win over God’s forgiveness
The Black Death spread across all of Europe for over seven years (1346-1353)
In the course of a few months, nearly 60% of Florence’s population died from this plague.

The first symptom of the Black death began in the groin, or under the armpit.
After having the swellings, the swelling grew into a size of an egg, called a “Tumor”.
No medicine or the doctor’s advice could overcome this swelling.
After having the tumor, the symptoms changed, as of having blue and purple spots appearing on the arm.
