Question 3: What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Q3 Initial idea focus group

Our audience feedback was carried out through the use of a focus group to gain the opinion of our peers. We recorded the session so that we would watch it back and take in what was being said. This helped us to choose the type of RnB Video to aim for as the audience were a perfect fit for the demographics that our audience was going to be. We understood their likes and dislikes and then planned our video based on this. In terms of precise feedback, we learnt that the audience were font of an older RnB video and his was helpful as it meant that we didn’t have to focus on making the video about wealth and success. Many of Chris Brown’s videos are centred around expensive jewellry, big house and fast cars which would not have been very realistic to achieve. We instead, were influenced to refer back to old conventions and create a narrative based piece around love and relationships.

Q3 Post production feedback

We then constructed the video and showed it to a similar audience when we were done. This focus group entailed a questionnaire so that we could read the feedback and understand how we would change the video in future. This group was also very helpful in analysing our work and to see how an audience would respond to what we had created. This feedback was predominantly positive and they enjoyed the video but there were a few grey areas which we were informed about. These were helpful to identify mistakes and to ultimately evaluate the piece. We carried this session out with students that were experienced in Media Studies and so this provided a detailed and precise form of feedback in the Octagon where we projected the video using surround sound so that the audience could locate all the fine details that we had included during editing.

Q3 Strengths and Weaknesses

After watching the video, the audience were very precise on what went well and what they would change. We were told by the group that our camera angles were well varied to provide different perspectives throughout the video whilst they also told us that the transitions were very free flowing and professional. One peer said that the video would look effective with most RnB songs which proved our ability to conform to conventions whilst weaknesses that were considered were the clarity of the storyline through characters and shots as well as costume which could have been more varied. All of this feedback was very helpful and we were pleased with the compliments that we received about it. Here are the overall strengths and weaknesses of our final product video.

Q3 Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

"Accurate matching up of lip syncing to audio, very well edited. "

"The video could apply to many other RnB videos of a similar type. "

"Very good variation of camera angles for different perspectives and the transitions flow really well. "

"Relatable locations for the arguing scenes and good backdrop for the performance."

"Good use of motif and motion changed e.g. Slow and fast motion."

Weaknesses

"The narrative could have been a little clearer in terms of how the cheating happened and why they are arguing. "

"Include another person to play the male that the girl has cheated with. "

"Change the costume more to establish different types of scenes and situations."

Question 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Q4 RESEARCH AND PLANNING

Most of my research came from the internet through google and ultimately websites such as slideshare where I found common conventions and ideas about the different types of RnB video that existed. This helped to structure the type of video that I would create. I also used YouTube to look at different existing videos from artists such as: Neyo, Chris Brown and usher who were very useful as in the end, the video that we created was similar to their videos. Watching these gave me ideas on costume, location and structure. Another video that did this was a YouTube video of an exisiting a level piece which achieved full marks and so we used it for inspiration and this gave us the idea to include a time lapse. Other technology that we used was the iPad ans tripod which we used to film a focus group for audience feedback. We filmed this and edited it using the Apple Macs so that this feedback could be visivle on each of our individual blog pages.

Q4 PRODUCTION

Most of my production was captured using Apple products which were convenient and of high quality. We filmed the video using a 4th generation iPad as well as my iPhone 5s when storage became a problem. I also used this phone to take my pictures for the ancillary tasks as the pictures came out looking very professional. In order to capture this footage, I used the tripod which helped me to achieve all of my still shots. The creation of these ancillary tasks was put together using micorsoft publisher as I was very familiar with its feaures and how it works. This allowed to me work efficiently and to create an effective piece of which I could use my experience of this software to finish the task.

Q4 POST PRODUCTION

My production for the main video product was edited using the software Final Cut Pro X which contained a range of features that helped me put together a very effective piece. I enjoyed exploring the transitions that I could place between clips for a professional look whilst features such as: slow motion and the blade+cut tool were also very helpful to ensure that my video flowed easily. I had knowledge of this software from AS media and so I knew how to navigate around the software and which features would be most appropriate to fit our success criteria in the video. We also filmed another focus group for feedback and we filmed this with the Iphone 5s generation and this footage was also edited on final cut pro x via the apple macs. This was then uploaded using youtube so that the feedback and notes could be again visible on my blog page.
