Narrative Theory

Hannah Wood
Narrative Theory
Tsyvetan Todorov
5 Stages to every narrative:
-
Stage 1 – The Equilibrium (Life is just as usual)
-
Stage 2 – The Disruption (A Problem)
-
Stage 3 – The Recognition (Think how to resolve)
-
Stage 4 – The Repair (Resolve Problem)
-
Stage 5 – The Restoration (Life returns to normal)
-
Non-linear – The stages may all be included however
not in this numerical order
Levi Strauss
Binary Opposites:
We understand some concepts purely by the fact
that they have opposites e.g. a superhero film must
feature a villain in order for the hero to become a
hero.
Examples:
-
Good and evil
-
Sane and insane
-
Peace and war
Roland Barthes
The Enigma Code
The storyline is set up in the form of a puzzle or
enigma which the audience may try to solve – as
will the protagonist – as the narrative progress
Our music video will have an anachronic structure
as it is not in chronological order. This means that
the audience may need to solve the order and piece
the narrative together.
Our Music Video
-
We think that Levi Strauss’ theory applies to our
music video as the contrasting themes of UK and
USA are heavily featured as the two locations
used.
-
The binary opposites of past and present in our
music video causes the theory to apply to our
video in this way also.
-
The beginning of the music video, the man is in
disequilibrium and wishes to return to
equilibrium back home in America.
