The history of music videos...

What is a music video?
A music video is a video or a short film which accompanies a piece of music or a song. The most common use for music videos in the present day are to advertise and promote the song to a global audience, to sell more music.
The First Music Video
The first music video was released on November the 10th 1975  by Queen, the video was for their song Bohemian Rhapsody. It took a few minutes rehearsal before they filmed the promotional video for their song which cost them a few thousand pounds to create. The purpose of this video was for it to be used on Top of The Pops so that their long song would stand a chance of making it up towards the top end of the chart. It was a very basic video which showed the band performing their song, but it was effective as the song remained number one in the UK charts for 9 weeks.
Since there have been many music videos promoting the songs of artists, and with so many videos being released there have been many changes made with a few increased budgets. For example A-ha released their song Take On Me with a music video with a different idea. Their music video told a story about a male cartoon hero who rescued a girl from her average life and gave her the adventure of a life time in a cartoon world.
An example of a more  modern music video which uses a creative idea to make their video more original is The Scientist by Coldplay. Their whole video has been filmed in reverse which  creates a challenging task of matching up the lip-syncing correctly which this video does extremely well. Although is has been reversed, it does still tell a story of heartbreak making it a watchable video and a great promotional device.
More recent pop music videos tend to be high budget videos that use all kinds of special effects, such as Katy Perry's video for Roar, designer outfits, such as Fleur East's video for Sax and fancy locations, such as Flo Rida's video for Wild Ones, which appeals to their target audience of young impressional viewers who dream of a luxury lifestyle.  So since the release of the Bohemian Rhapsody music video in 1975, music videos have developed a lot, telling short stories, using bigger budgets and showing of a lifestyle that most wish they had instead of just performing their music.
