Distribution
Conventional vs new methods
Independent films normally go straight to DVD and do not go into cinemas. The reason for this is because of the low demand for them. A distributor would meet with the film producers and they would then split the profit. This is still a way that some films are distributed.

Now, however, there is a new way to distribute your film: self distribution. This has become a possibility due to viewing platforms such as iTunes, BitTorrent, Vimeo, and Netflix.
Bittorrent advantages
BitTorrent is a free platform and costs nothing to upkeep. Also it is easy to access and easy to use, therefore  lots of people can use it giving the film a wide audience. Furthermore BitTorrent can share files with everyone and doesn't need a search engine as a medium. Lastly there is no censorship.
Bittorrwnt disadvangates
Although BitTorrent has advantages there are disadvantages too. BitTorrent has unchecked user use. Also viruses are easily spread throughout the website therefore users are susceptible to attack. Furthermore, the government fines for infringed material is severe.
Netflix
Advantages
Netflix has a big user base which is useful for a film because they will be able to target there audience easily.  Also because of netflixs large platform, yout film is more likely to be viewed and can also be rated by the audience which is good for feedback. Lastly as netflix is such a largely used platform, your film will look professional on the website.
Netflix
Disadvantages
There are lots of advantages of Netflix but there are also disadvantages. For Neflixs, the best way to get your film on Netlflix is to use an aggregator, however these are not cheap and will cost up to £1500 depending on which service you use. Netflix also doesn't have the best reputation for independent film makers as they normally ask for an upfront fee and this is not good for low budget films.
Itunes advantages
iTunes is one of the most known and largest media platforms in the media world, therefore this will have lots of benefits. Firstly, your film will be on the same media platform as major movies, this will convey your film to look more proffessional. Also, because iTunes is a very large platform, this will increase the size of your audience so more people are likely to see it.  Lastly, because of the members of iTunes already have there credit and debit cards registered, they can make quick and easy transactions. Therefore your film is more likely to be bought.
Itunes disadvantages
Although iTunes is mainly good for distributing your film, there a couple of downsides which can be seen below: - To get your movie on iTunes you will need what is known as a 'aggregator'. These will get your film onto iTunes, and aren't cheap: they can cost up to $1500. However, this is worth paying. - The other way to get your film on iTunes is to go to iTunes themselves. This can be a long, fiddly and difficult process and you may end up rejected at the end. - When you're on iTunes, they take 30% of your profit, leaving you with 70%.
Vimeo Advantages
There are lots of advantages to Vimeo, such as you do not need to go through an aggregator to get your movie on, therefore it is a cheaper option. Vimeo is also accessible to people who are viewing on their apple TVs therefore increasing the audience who can view your film.
Vimeo disadvantages
Although Vimeo  has many advantages if you already have a small online audience which you can direct towards Vimeo, it can be hard to gain an audience from Vimeo. This is due to there being a lot of unregulated content on Vimeo making it less reliable and trusted than other platforms such as iTunes. It is also a lot more saturated as a result of the unregulated content. The fee for a pro account on Vimeo is £200 a year. This makes it hard for people with no budget or funding to pay.
