What have i leanrt from my preliminary task to the progression to full product
How did the planning differentaite from basic prelim to main task?
The difference in the amount of planning that took place before the prelim and before the main task is huge. The sophistication of planning and preparation before the prelim shoot was very poor and very little took place. When we were filming the prelim we were given a storyboard with a script and the camera shots to follow. this meant that we did not need to plan or prepare because we already had what we needed. Some of the other struggles that went into the main task such as where to film? and who should be the actors?, Weren't such problems that needed planning in advance as we knew we were filming at school and using fellow peers to be the actors. Unlike the main task where we were creating are own ideas from scratch and had to plan every shot and aspect of the film in this case we were very much following a set template and just exciting it to the best way possible.
How did the planning differentaite from basic prelim to main task?
In comparison the main task involved high sophisticated planning and excellent  preparation. Unlike the prelim we weren't given a template with camera shots and a script we had to prepare everything including: Script, shot by shot list, casting actors, finding locations and when to film. The planning was far more in depth and it involved a lot of creativity and hard work. It was really important to plan well to ensure we would be ready to film in time. Furthermore, planning had to be extremely thorough when it came to the main task because we needed to complete every aspect of the plan to have a full storyline and outline of the film. for example without a good shot by shot list or script we would not be able to film or have any idea of what are film will look like it would have just been improvisation. The main task involved a lot more preparation because  as we had no template like the prelim and were creating every aspect of the movie ourselves.
Examples of planning and preparation for the main task
Not only did we have to prepare scripts and storyboards for our films but we also had to do lots of research and questionnaires on the thriller genre. Unlike the prelim which was to short and simple to have a genre, for the main task we were specifically making films of the thriller genre. This meant that lots of research had to be done in order to find out what people want to see in thrillers and generic conventions of a thriller. I did many questionnaires to ask people of my target audience of things they would like to see in thriller. Also much research was done looking into films similar to my idea and what they did in their film and how we can use, develop or challenge the conventions they used. This was another time consuming process as part of the preparation for the prelim as research into thrillers and thriller sub-genres for example crime or political, was very important to be able to make an accurate thriller film that attracts to fans of the thriller genre,
How did my film making skills develop?
When doing the prelim task the only shots involved were the more simple shots such as close ups, medium close ups and wide shots but in the main task this was not the case. For the main task we used lots of different shots as we needed to create a visual narrative and not just show a conversation. for example we used a low angle shot instead of a medium shot to show the boss as powerful and superior. This is something that wasn't needed in the prelim as their wasn't a narrative but when you are making a real film with a longer and detailed storyline things such as showing somebody to be powerful and superior is vital to the plot and how a character is portrayed. We had to be creative in this regard as we had to make a storyboard that told a story with the shots themselves. In the prelim if we didn't have words you would not understand what is going on due to the simple shots such a wide shots and medium. But for the main we had to create a visual narrative that could be seen through the shots and not just the dialogue. Overall i feel i was able to do this well and develop and learn the different shots i needed to use to create a story.
Comparison of storyboard?
Prelim
main task
This is just 3 parts out of 24 of my storyboard. I found storyboarding quite hard as it is very tough to visualise something in your head and draw it. But on the flip side it helped us visualise it at the same time as we now had it on paper and could see the overall flow of the film as a visual story. our film only has a voice over and no dialogue from the characters in the scene so it is important for us to make a visual story with the flow of shots so the audience can see the dynamic and the storyline without dialogue.
Use of camera
Since my prelim task a lot has changed in my understanding of the different use of camera shots. The main developments are in my understanding of how to use camera shots to portray a characters in a certain way or a certain mood. When doing my prelim i didn't have this knowledge so maybe if i had i could have shot a low angle of character A to show they had the power in the conversation instead of just a medium shot. This was the type of developments i made in my main task and i was able to frame shots to show different meanings and emotions.
Examples of developed use of camera work
Prelim
main task
This screenshot is from the part of my prelim where the girl on the left says 'I cant wait for, you i wont wait for you', and then walks out. She clearly has the power in this situation but without the dialogue you would not know this. This is where i couldve used a low angle shot of the girl on the left to show she has the power and is superior. This is why although a bit more obvious in my main task i use a low angle to show the young boy has the power and is looking down at someone. This clearly emphasises his superiority in the situation where a medium shot would not highlight this as much.
