Who are they?

  • Some of the famous people of the Shoshone Indian Tribe are Chief Little Soldier, Chief Pocatello, Chief Bear Hunter, Chief Washakie, and the most known leader of the Shoshone tribe, Sacagawea.


All About Sacagawea
  • Sacagawea rescued lost articles from perogue which really helped William Clark
  • She would help get medicine for cramps or the boils and things they had, she would would always help them.
  • When they were very hungry she would find different types of food for them such as nuts, berries and set traps and catch fish.
  • She also made clothing for them and showed other people how to make the clothing.
  • She also saved the journals from floating down the Missouri River when no one else would get in the water, she did this all while with a baby on her back.
Where they lived
  • The Shoshone Indians lived in California, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and Montana. 
  • The Shoshone Tribe consisted of about 8,000 members. 
There Way of Life
  • Sometimes they were called the "Snake Indians" other times they were called "Diggers" because they needed to dig for food such as roots from the ground.
  • They hunted Buffalo, Antelope, marmot, beaver, deer, elk, and fox.

 

What They're Known for
  • Unlike most Indian Tribes, they were not into jewelry but were famous for their beautiful bead work, woven baskets, art/painting.
  • They had many different ceremonial dances such as The Sun Dance which is a religious festival that took place in the summer and the Buffalo Dance where woman played the part of buffalo mostly for entertainment.
  • Lewis and Clark were the first white men that the Shoshone met.  They communicated through sign language and terms with the help of Sacagawea, the Shoshone knew they meant no harm. 
  • They made many enemies because they were known to steal horses from tribes such as the Crow and the Pocatello.

What Male Shoshoneans Wore


   

  • In the summer male Shoshones wore a simple loincloth.
  • In the winter they would wear rabbit robes and pants or other types of fur to help keep warm
What Female Shoshoneans Wore
  • During the summer female Shoshones would wear just a basic apron.
  • During the winter they would wear coats made out of rabbit fur or other animal fur
Clothing that both Shoshone Men and Women Wore
  • Both men and women wore and used beads, shells, animal bones and teeth, and quills to decorate their clothing.
  • They also wore moccasins insulated with bark for warmth and made out of animal hide
