The berlin airlift
A presentation by Dorian ward
During the cold war which happened from 1947 to 1991, a battle, more like a protest happened from 1948 to 1949 called the Berlin airlift took place. June 1948, Joseph Stalin had issued a blockade in west Berlin which was under allie control. stalin thought it was impossible for the allies to start sending shipments of supplies for Berlin. but he was wrong
the non-shooting war
Stalin was doing everything BUT shoot to shoot and kill troops and civilians. he was shutting down all ways for Berlin to get supplies but planes. he turned off electricity. clay said it was a ruthless act for using starvation for political force. the first c-47's landed with 200 tone of flour on June 26
The only planes used by the U.S. were identical planes which could carry ten tons. even though modern models carry way more. they were a big part in the airlift since all of the supplies were shipped by air.
After a couple of months, the daily amount of supplies flown over to Berlin was 9000 tons a day. on Easter Sunday they set a record for the most supplies flown over with 1300 tons, after that it went back down to 9000 tons per day, and Stalin was not happy with all the shipments.
As you know, the Berlin airlift was one of the non-physical battles in the cold war, although trying to starve people, stalin did not want ot start a physical fire fight, so he did everything but fire at the planes such as release weather balloons and have jets fly real close to the planes and pull away to annoy the pilots
The allies even made a blockade of their own in east Berlin to block the soviets from getting the supplies that they needed. most of west berlins coal was going to factory's, so people had to start cutting down trees to keep their houses and family's warm
Because of the allies blocking the soviets east Berlin from receiving  supplies. Stalin finally released the blockade. it only lasted one year but it was a big victory for the allies because they saved west Berlin from falling into axis control
