Research and planning the CD/DVD cover advert
By Farhana Kobir

Front cover: The front cover displays a close up shot of the artist's face, with her facial expression depicting mix feelings and emotions. This is because we are neither sure if she is happy or not or simply an independent woman who is humble yet has an attitude that depicts her as one to not be walked all over by a man perhaps. The colour red is used to reinforce the genre of the music and title of the album. It is also quite clear that the colour red is used to ensure the artist stands out in the picture, through her hair and lips being highlighted. Furthermore, the colour red can have different meanings, for example in this case, she is wearing red lipstick which may be associated with being sexy, seductive, smart, evil. Yet, the look on her face with her eyes looking down may present her as innocent. I feel the colours used on this cover, as well as the title of the album both have a hidden message which is hard to read. There is also this idea of the artist's face being presented as a mask, veiled, needing to be uncovered, as though we are unsure of the intentions of the artist. This is because for example, the title of the album is 'loud', yet the photo shown of the artist says otherwise.
Back cover: The colour red has been used here also, which matches with the image of the artist and her roses. The image here almost follows a narrative or a storyboard whereby the emotion and feelings of the artist is displayed in each of the images.
House style:I like the use of red throughout the music video and the use of flowers and roses to symbolize happiness, love and confidence. The colour white has also been used well and may connote innocence and peace, as well as presenting the artist in this way.
CD: I really like the use of the flower blossoming out, which looks really simple but elegant. It also adds to the theme of the whole music video of love and innocence.
Inside cover:
This is a landscape portrait of Rihanna laying across a bed of red roses with her head tilted sideways and her eyes closed again. Again the colour red is emphasized here as red roses have been used in the background which is in order to add to the genre of the music and the theme of love. As, RnB music is understood to be a type of genre that relates to this societies way of thinking, for example, love and the common idea of how love should be now. Thus, in this way Rihanna may perhaps be portraying this love in the way her target audience would expect to see, for example through her showing emotions of longing and feeling lonely although she looks bright, confidence, independence and vibrant. I also like how the photo has continued on throughout the three side inside, which is something different and unique.

Front cover: This is a long medium shot taken of the artist posing with her body bent over against the wall which relates to her caption- 'good girl gone bad'. This includes the title of the album and the choice of color used which is associated with evil, danger, a warning and something dark and bleak.
The contrast in colors from white to black is also very significant as it adds to the idea of the transition from good and bad. For example, the white used in the background symbolizes innocence and how this had faded in with the sense of darkness and evil as the color is mixed with black. Her posture is also very important here as it shows she has 'bent the rules' and so her body imitates this. As well as, how she is positioned away from the white side and more closer to the black side in the background used, which shows she has moved to the bad side. Furthermore, the artist's is covering one side of her face with her hair which is significant her as it may be a way of her emphasizing the little innocence left from the side of her face that is showing as opposed to the hidden side, which is being kept a secret as shes gone bad and is trying to disclose this.
Back cover: This is a close up of the artist showing very clearly her facial expression and once again the emphasis of her face being covered on one side. It is almost as though she is accepting of this change and is happy to share this with the world, which is evident through the choice of songs she's used in her album. This color red is used again to list the song tracks for the album and is matched with the album title as well. It also fits in well as a color to use against the black and white background to enable the song tracks listed to stand out.
House style: The colors used follow a monochrome theme, which works really well in accordance with the genre of the music.
Cd:This has been kept simple and names the title of the album again but this time in a different color which is like a faded aqua blue. This is quite interesting as it is least expected since the rest of the album i.e the front and back cover have been written using the color red, however here this isn't the case. This therefore, could be because the color red was important to use against the artist's face to highlight the artist as a different person now, whereas on the CD cover there is no picture used.

Front cover: This is a close up shot of the artist with a clear view of her facial expressions displaying a mystical look, which is connected with the album title 'femme fatale'. Her charming pose is very powerful as it defines her album very clearly. The artist has used various techniques to convey this message which is for one through the artist placing her arm behind her back, and the way her hair has been shifted to one side. This includes the facial expression the artist uses which portrays her in a seductive, confident and somewhat dangerous manner. Thus, explaining what her album will be about. The album title has been written out quite boldly compared to the size of the font of the artists name. Thus, emphasizing the album title more extremely and so causing one to place the eyes directly onto the artist once they read what the album is about.
Back cover :
The image used here is again of the artist, but with her face hidden underneath her hair, yet this in itself is another way in which the artist is presenting herself as someone to lust over or feel more drawn towards. As her face being hidden connotes the idea of a secret, something mysterious, exciting, dangerous but desirable. This includes, the choice of clothing she has worn which is revealing and has sexual connotations. The use of the window frame looking out is very interesting here as it almost seems as though the window is divided to one side and the artist on the other. This may be also in relation to the album title as it may be showing how the artist is the 'femme fatale' who is very strongly desirable despite her attempts of supposedly hiding away but yet allowing a person to decide for themselves the choice they would like to make, which is to either give in to their desires or ignore them and look away from the artist and out the window.
Inside cover: I really like the colors used here, which is again a classy look with either sides of the cover being kept plain and simple with just a black background. The artist is used in between to show her importance as she is sitting down on a luxurious sofa which adds to the classy and seductive look. This is also highlighted through the type of dress worn by the artist, especially the color of the dress.
House style: The colors used in the album create a classy look and also raises the status and confidence of the artist due to this. Colors have also been matched accordingly and stand out where they need to.
Cd:This has been kept plain and simple and the use of the color grey gives it a neutral look

This advert follows an RnB genre and is portrayed as this in many ways. To begin with, the image used is of the artist which is very powerful as she is posing with half her face covered by her hand. This therefore, connects with the theme of the album name 'Russian roulette', which connotes darkness, something bleak, death and devilish. The house style colors are also very good as the color black is used for the background which creates this ghastly look and drags attention immediately towards the artist's face. Her make up also impacts greatly as it follows the theme and title of her album. Furthermore, the color red holds great importance too as it connotes pain, blood, killing, and devils. Going back to the artist's face, the fact that one half of her face is covered is very significant here as it also symbolizes the idea of the evil eye, devils and the sign of the illuminati. Her hand jewellery is also quite important here as it emphasizes her look, which is of coming across as deadly yet expressing her feeling quite trapped as she is involved in a 'Russian roulette' supposedly. So her hand jewellery explains her as being trapped in this way as she has alot of jewellery on her. However, this may be juxtaposed with the idea that may be she isn't trapped and that she is actually hiding something underneath and that she is using her hand to cover up a mask. In addition, her make up creates a dramatic look and adds to the theme.

The house style colors used here are very nice and follow a rich, womanly look with the choice of colors used. There are two pictures used here, which is very good as it permits us to know what the album cover will look like as well. The style of font used is also quite impressive as each letter of the artists and album title has been spaced out which relates to the album title as being loud and spaced out everywhere. The color white is also significant as it connotes innocence and peacefulness which is shown in the image of the artist outside surrounded by nature. Furthermore, the faded red border on top and underneath the writing is also matched in well with the advert itself and works well to boldly highlight the album title and artist's name. It may also seem intriguing to think that both images used are of the artist looking away or down and not at us as this is juxtaposed with her album title 'Loud'. Thus, this may tempt us to want to buy the album because we would want to understand the connection of both what the album is about and how the artist portrays this through her music.
I'm going to try and keep my album as simple as possible.
Just like Rihanna doesn't look at the camera, i also don't want my artist to look at the camera either as i believe it creates more meaning with how it links to the music in the album.
I want to keep my album similar to how Rihanna has done hers as i believe that my music video goes with the theme the album 'loud'
