Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

by Ayat Awan
Age

The music magazine Paper Aeroplane which I have created is targeted towards both genders of the ages 20 onwards. The magazine is open to any age however it is likely teenagers won’t invest in a magazine therefore the target age I have used for my magazine audience is 20 years and onwards. This is because usually people of the age 20 and onwards are likely to have a fulltime career or part-time job therefore they are more likely to afford a magazine. This is the main reason as to why I have chosen this age group. As it is more likely for someone of this age group to invest in a magazine over any person of an age younger. I have shown this as in my magazine all the celebrities and the made up cover star is thought to be of an older age of in their early 20’s or later. I also added mature topics such as how a celebrity speaks on the topic of fatherhood, this could be seen as a more mature article which readers of an older age group could relate to.

Gender

I have tried to target both genders in my music magazine. I have done this mainly through my cover and contents page. My house style in general are neutral, pastel colours which automatically made the magazine apply to both genders. I have used a pinkish red colour – which is commonly noted as a female colour, as a house style throughout my whole magazine along with a blue which is seen as a male colour. Alongside my cover lines are related to both male and females therefore it is pretty clear that a male or female consumer can read this magazine. On my contents page I have enforced this idea through images as I have added images of male and females, this shows that there are articles included in the magazine which both genders can relate to.

Ethnicity

My music magazine is open to any ethnic origin. I have shown this by enforcing images of different races of black, white and brown. On my cover star, you can very clearly tell that my cover star isn't of a Caucasian origin, I have tried to enhance the complexion of my colour star so this is clear. Alongside this on my cover celebrities who are from different races are mentioned, for example Oli Sykes who is white. Therefore, this automatically gives an insight to the fact that this magazine is open to any race. Other than this on my contents page I have images of model who is from a black background, you can clearly identify the differences.

Dynamic Groups

The dynamic groups my magazine is targeted towards is A, B, C1. This is primarily because these are the dynamic groups which are likely to have left over money to purchase a magazine. These dynamic groups are of those who are working in some kind of way, therefore they are earning money which – this means they are able to buy things. I haven’t chosen to groups after these as it is unlikely for any of the other dynamic groups to buy a magazine.

Psychographic Groups

The psycho-graphics I want my magazine to attract are the mainstreamer and the explorer. The mainstreamer is someone who is always up to date with the mainstream trends taking place, therefore I have added cover lines such as ‘I am the New King of Rock’’ as the mainstreamer will be attracted to this to find out who is in the spotlight. I have also chosen the explorer as they are into finding new things and as my magazine will be fairly new, they won’t hesitate to purchase it and give it a read to see what it’s about. I have therefore made my cover very attractive so the explorer is led to read it.

Conclusion

Overall, the social group I have chosen is likely to be attracted to my magazine mainly because of how my cover looks sleek, the colours are very bright and match very well in the indie theme. If your fashion style in general is very, hipster or indie then the cover itself is the main attraction as I have made my cover star wear clothes which are very casual, affordable and easy to recreate. The images in my magazine are also very laidback and relaxed, they look real. For example the image on my contents page where my model is casually posing in the smoke with her phone is a realistic pose, I linked that picture with a smoke festival caption and I believe, that image looks very natural and one that would actually be taken at a smoke festival therefore this will show my audience that my magazine is professional yet fun.
