Fungi STructure
Fruiting Body:
~ part of the fungus that you see above ground- the reproductive structure
Hyphae:
~ thread like filament which makes the structure of the fungus
Mycelium:
~ bulk of the organism in the form of a branching network
FUN FACT
Fungus are more closely related in DNA to humans than to plants.
Fungi Nutrition
Hyphae release enzymes that break down food externally. Nutrients from food are absorbed through the cell membrane and are travel through the mycelium.
Types of Fungal Nutrition:
Parasitic
Parasitic Fungi, such as Cordyceps, invade a host organism’s body and absorb the nutrients from the organism’s living cells.
Predatory
Mutualistic
Plants and protists and other organisms often form partnerships with mutualistic fungi.
Saprobial
Saprobial Fungus are decomposers whose mycelia absorb nutrients from the dead or decaying matter.
Fun fact
Many types of mushrooms grow wild. Some are edible, but some are very poisonous. The Destroying Angel mushroom is a white mushroom poisonous enough to kill you...DON'T TRY IT!!
