Target Audience
The target audience for my product is young people of ages 16-25 of both genders. When conducting my audience research I mostly handed my questionnaires and asked for feedback from this target audience. This helped me to gain an effective set of results where the opinions of the audience were relevant as they would be the ones consuming my product. However I did ask for feedback from teachers and other adults because although the product is not targeted at them, they could still tell me if my products looked conventional and stood out well to them as a horror film product.

Audience Profile
My audeince profile shows me that my audience will understand references to popular culture, and as such I should include these in my film trailer in elements such as the mise-en-scene, character types and costumes. This will help the audience  relate to the characters and enjoy the film more.

Genre Questionnaire
I designed my genre questionnaire with the intention of using it to plan my idea for my film trailer. I asked questions about the genre and target audience so that I could choose the most popular and effective trailer. I asked questions about age and gender to make sure that I was collecting data from my target audience, and then asked questions about the horror genre so that I could design my horror film around them and make sure it appeals to the audience.

What I learned from my survey
On this question 71.5% of participants said that they do enjoy horror films. This is good because if my audience did not enjoy horror films then my product would not be successful. This shows me that there is still a market for my product and it will be popular with my target audience.

Question 2 - What is your favourite sub-genre?
This question was needed to determine which sub-genre I would base my film on. With the increasing popularity of hybrid films this question was very important, and so I gave a range of sub genres for my participants to choose from. supernatural was the most popular at 50%, closely followed by psychological at 37.5%. This was helpful when deciding which sub genre to choose, and this shows clearly that supernatural is the most popular amongst my target demographic.

Question 3 - What do you enjoy most about horror films?
This question requires the participant to write their own answer, meaning that I get a more unique response from each person. Getting a more specific answer helps me to work on the smaller details. This question showed me that the characters had to be portrayed well by the actress. It also tells me that I have to add jump scares and have a good narrative. This is helpful in helping me to plan my plot and choose what to include in my trailer.

Question 4 - What do you least enjoy about Horror films?
Question 4 tackles the least enjoyable elements of horror films. Making sure that I know what not to include in my trailer is important so that the trailer only contains relevant and appealing elements and helps me to avoid putting in things that the audience will dislike. My survey shows that some of the things I should avoid include a slow plot and predictable events.

Question 5 - What would you like to see in a horror trailer?
This question shows me what I should include in my film trailer. It is prominent from my research that the plot is one of the most important parts of the trailer. This meant that when I was planning my trailer I made sure that the plot was very prominent  and all of the scenes were key to progressing the story. It was also made clear that I had to have a good use of costume for the antagonist with a good reveal. This meant that I spent a lot of time in the planning  stages making sure that the majority of the trailer was based around the reveal scene, and had a good build up to the reveal so that I could include a jump scare.

Questionnaire 2 - Ancillary Texts
The purpose of this questionnaire was to find out how effective my ancillary texts were and ask the audience how they could be improved. This was helpful for me gathering information about the smaller more specific details of my texts, and pinpoint what stood out the most to the audience bot good and bad. This helped me to make the appropriate edits to the texts and make them more appealing to the target audience, as this is who I gave my questionnaire to.

This question shows that my poster mostly meets the conventions of my genre. From this I could also infer that my poster reflects the genre and makes it apparent to the audience what genre the film is. 8% of my participants said that they were unsure weather my poster fits the conventions of the genre, and so I could use this as advice and in my next draft make the genre more obvious by using more obvious conventions such as colour and text.

Do you think that the poster looks conventional for a horror film?

Question 3 - What do you like about the poster?
This question was designed to back up the points made in question 2 and add a little more detail to the answer. With this question I could see why people liked my poster as they would highlight what worked well so I knew what I didn't have to change in the next draft.

Question 4 - What would you change about the poster?
This question was added in order to highlight what specifically the audience thought should be changed. As I anticipated, similar answers were given from each person with only about 3 main changes being mentioned. This made it easier to make changes in the next draft as I knew which specific changed had to be
made, which saved me a lot of time.
Also people mentioned things I had
not noticed, which was more helpful
than me just guessing what needed improving.

Examples of Changes
Here you can see how I have used my feedback to make changes to my products. Here is my film poster before audience feedback and after. As you can see the recommendations from question 4 have been incorporated into the poster.

This final question was just to help me get a concept of if the poster was heading in the right direction or not. I wanted to make sure that it was only small changes that were needed so that I knew to continue with the layout I already had rather than starting the poster from fresh. Nobody said that they disagreed which was good, however 9% said they were unsure, so I knew that I had to work on making sure that the poster was clear in it;s aims.

Does the poster advertise the film well?
Focus Groups
Focus groups were a good way of getting direct feedback while the product was still fresh in my participants mind. Showing them the trailer and then getting their immediate reactions is a great way of seeing the first impressions that my trailer makes, and what stands out in the audience's mind after they have watched it.

Focus group feedback
The feedback from my focus groups was very helpful so that I could get a quick and honest response from my audience. I asked people from the target audience to participate and tell me what they thought of the trailer. This was very useful when planning changes for my final drafts of my trailer as the audience spotted things that I may not have such as the text being harder to read  if you wear glasses. It may also have the opposite effect, for example I had a small gap in  between two sections of the trailer which I thought was obvious but my audience said looked intentional and they didn't really notice it.

Final Thoughts
In conclusion I found that out of all my audience feedback the focus groups were most valuable. This allowed me to get a direct answer from my audience while the text was still fresh in their mind, allowing me to get a more honest answer as they didn't have too much time to think before they replied. Having a focus group also meant that if I was not satisfied with an answer or needed more detail I could get it there and then rather thank having to send out a new questionnaire. Although the questionnaires gave me some very helpful feedback, I found that they were not always reliable as some people did not give a written answer or were very vague, meaning that their opinion was not really any help to me. Overall audience feedback helped to highlight new things that I may not have noticed, and give a second opinion to my own. It also helped me to make my product more appealing to the target audience, making my product more effective.
