Who were the Seigneurs?
Seigneurs were the feudal lord or the lord of a manor. In other words a Seigneur was a person that owned land which could be farmed by settlers that in return would earn a place to live, food and their own land in the future
When and why did they come to New France?
Seigneurs started coming to New France when the Seigneurial System was invented which was between the years 1627 and 1854.
They came to new France because there needed to be a person that would collect the rent from the settlers that would live on that land
What was the Seigneurs job and where did they come from?
The job of the Seigneur was to collect various forms of rent such as money and crops from the Habitants that lived on that land
The Seigneurs were people from France that were somewhat wealthy or they had a connection with a noble family and therefore they were granted fiefs. A fief is given by a person of high authority to another person which gives rights of owning land to that person. With that given power the Seigneurs moved to New France so they could get settlers to farm their land which in return would give the Seigneur money or crops.
What is the Seigneurial System?
The Seigneurial System is simply a way of distributing pieces of land that were 5 by 15km so that all settlers could have easy access to the river, the church and a mill. This land was called a Seigneurie. The Seigneur would be in charge of collecting rent from the settlers and he would have rights to operate the mill and establish a court of law. The most Major role of this Seigneurial System was to give the settlers even plots of land that they could farm and in the end colonize New France.
Who are the Seigneurs of our modern time?
The Seigneurs of today are simply people who rent land. Examples of people who rent land are the superintendents of apartment buildings. They have the same jobs as Seigneurs because they both collect rent from the people living on their land and they are allowed to access nearly every part of the apartment.
The only difference between a Seigneur and a superintendent is that a superintendent does not have to be wealthy or related to a noble family, and the people who rent the land don't farm it and are obligated to pay their rent in money.
