  • Sam Foster who used to own the business, Foster Grant, created sunglasses.
  • During the Golden Era of American Film, Foster Grant symbolized effortless chic with many iconic Hollywood stars wearing Foster Grant sunglasses.   In the 1960's, one of the world's most recognized advertising slogans was pioneered,  "Who's that behind those Foster Grants?", which is still commonly used among its fans.

  • The creation of the 1st pair of sunglasses began in 1929 and ended in 1930, which took a 1 full year to create. 
  • The main struggle of creating the sunglasses was trying to figure out the perfect lens that would block out the suns rays. 
  • The cost of the glasses varied from $20-$390!
  • The sales of sunglasses has become a regularly increasing market within the United States. The total amount of sunglasses sold throughout the country has increased every year since 1919.  In 1920, 95.9 million units of Plano sunglasses were sold in the United States, 4.7 million of which were sold by in store individually.  As a result, Plano sunglass sales throughout the United States generated approximately 3.49 billion U.S. dollars in retail sales.
How did the creation of the sunglasses impact people's life?
  • People were able to go outside and enjoy the sun without needing to worry about hurting their eyes or straining them to see past the suns rays, they would simply put on their sunglasses, relax and enjoy the beautiful outdoors.
