Conventions of a magazine cover
- I have used different magazines to inspire the look of mine.

- The magazines which mostly suited the genre of Indie Rock were 'Q' magazine and 'Rolling Stone'
q & Rolling Stone
I have chosen these two magazines as an inspiration because they reflect the raggedy rock look that I am aiming for. These magazines do not only represent musicians, often actors are also a factor within them, however 'Rolling Stone' has been known immensely for crediting bands such as 'Oasis' and the queen of blues 'Amy Winehouse'. These type of musicians are what I am to portray in my magazine although the genre may differ.
The images I have chosen help demonstrate what would look best on a front cover of an indie rock magazine. They show that title block is highly important and should stand out to the readers, this is a way of advertising their magazine by instantly catching the eye of their target audience. They also show that the main image of the artist should be a close up or mid shot in order to take up most of the page.
The artists present themselves as strong and confident. They maintain a straight face and contain direct mode of address. Their props are usually something that you would not expect to encounter such as big sunglasses. or food in their mouths. This is to pass on to the audience the typical attitude of rock singers which is that they do not follow societies rules. Thier costume is generally dark and raggedy, also to represent the stereotype of indie rock artists.
conventions of a contents page
Issue number:
Usually appears somewhere near the title of the magazine - or beside it on the top right hand corner. In this contents page it appears beneath the title of the magazine in a red circle which is intended to catch the attention of the readers.
The three magazine contents pages that i have chosen to analyse are:
This content page of the magazine 'Q' infers that the layout of the page is most effective when containing various images. This is because it avoids the content page being tedious or the audience being bombarded by too much information at once.

I also liked the idea of having blocks behind the page numbers, although the typical look of a indie rock magazine is messy and raggedy, having the contents page set out in this manner shows makes it appear more organised and easier for the audience to understand.
This NME contents page appeals to the genre of my magazine as it presents the title at the top of the page. It adds colour to the page and makes sure the audience are aware of what page they are on and what they are reading.
Separating into categories also makes it easier for the audience to consume all the information. Including sections called 'features', 'rock n roll' and '2012 year in review' makes the page look neater.
