November 8th, 1864
Abraham Lincoln Is Reelected as President
March 3rd, 1865
The Freedmen's Bureau was enstablished. Their goal was to help newly freed African Americans and poor whites.
April, 1865
The American Civil War OFFICIALLY ended on April 8th and president Lincoln was assasinated on the 15th. Vice President Andrew Johnson became president.
December 6th, 1865
The 13th Amendment in the United States Constitution was ratified. This abolished slavery in the United States. On the same day, the Black Codes were enacted. These laws restricted the rights of African Americans and limited their advances.
April 9th, 1866
The Civil Rights Act of 1866 granted/guaranteed African Americans equal rights and citizenship
May 1-3, 1866
The Memphis Race Riot took place. A total of 46 African Americans were killed. 90 houses and schools were destroyed, along with four churches in Memphis, Tennessee.
July 30th, 1866
More than 40 black and white Republicans are killed and more than 150 are wounded in the New Orleans Race Riot.
The Ku Klux Klan is founded in Pulaski, Tennessee. This is a secret organization formed to oppress and intimidate African Americans and restore rule to white America

The U.S. Senate fails to remove Andrew Johnson from office by a single vote.
July 21, 1868
The 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution is ratified. This guarantees equal protection under law for African Americans.
November 3rd, 1868
On this day, former Union general Ulysses S. Grant is elected the 18th president of the United States.
February 23, 1870
The first black Senator in Congress, Hiram Revels is elected.
March 30, 1870
The Fifteenth Amendment was ratified. This gave African American men the right to vote.
March 1st, 1875
The Civil Rights Act of 1875 was enacted by Congress. This guaranteed equal rights to African Americans in jury service and public accomodations.
1876
- Presidential election dispute
- Wade Hampton elected as governor of South Carolina; this showed the South was not committed to Reconstruction.
1877
Rutherford B. Hayes is inaugurated as President and Reconstruction ends.
