Teaser Trailer
Conscious
Our teaser trailer, Conscious, is 1 minute 13 seconds long. This is conventional for a teaser trailer as most teasers are under a minute long or just over. As a group, we decided to stick to this convention in order to avoid the trap of continuity but at the same time be able to connote the enigmatic nature that resides within our trailer. We also did this in order to keep the aura of professionalism in our teaser trailer. The three part structure was also embedded within our trailer whereby we establish the characters throughout the trailer as we see them go through their torture and dilemma we then end on the door shutting to signify that there is no escape. This structure also allowed for a change of pace in the editing whereby we start with a fast paced 5 second flash and transition into a slow tracking shot.
Three part structure

5 second flash, fast paced editing to begin the three part structure.
Slow transition, slow paced editing in order to show a change in pace. Character development is furthered to incorporate the three part structure

The Three part structure is ended on the door shutting, this climax portrays the entrapment of the characters which further develops the plot and teases the audience with enigma.
Three Part Structure
The three part structure is a typical convention of a teaser trailer. It is used in an attempt to create an enigmatic atmosphere for the spectators as they watch. This type of structure allows for a strong foundation for the trailer to be able to outline the genre it belongs to as well as being able to portray the enigma codes that are embedded within the trailer.
The first part of the structure in our trailer is portrayed through the use of a five second flash whereby we establish the fast paced editing and then transition into smoother, slow paced editing. This not only grabs the audience's attention but can allow a sneak peak into what the spectator is about to see next, an exposition into the plot and characters exposed later in the trailer. This quickly and abruptly establishes a few characters with minuscule detail thus leading perfectly into the next part of the structure.
The second part of the structure is utilized to establish the dilemma characters face as the plot develops. We used this section to further develop the characters but at the same time, portray the conundrum they face and their downfall, we did this by contrasting shots where they look like average people and transition them into shots where they are being tortured. This allowed us to further develop the characters and follow the three part structure by showing the problems they face.
The third part of the structure outlines the 'climax' of the teaser trailer. This final section contains a series of shots complimented by fast paced editing. this is done to ensure there is no continuity in order to confuse the order and enhance the enigma. We end the trailer on a door slamming closed and an extreme close up of one of the victims look into the camera. This cuts the fast paced editing abruptly and leaves an impact within the audience as they a left to wonder if the victims are trapped and if they will ever escape which in return enhances the enigmatic factor.
Characters - Antagonists
The antagonist is first introduced in the five second flash. This was done in order to allow the enigma codes to thrive within our trailer as it teases the audience and in return grabs their attention. The antagonist is also first seen in a low angle, this is to reinforce his overpowering characteristic that the antagonist upholds throughout the trailer.

The antagonist is then seen again walking past the camera, the close up we filmed his feet walking past slowly allowed us to solidify the core theme within our trailer, mystery. We did this to emphasize on the character's identity being hidden in order to exemplify the enigma codes within our thriller teaser trailer, this also allowed us to maintain our professionalism since most Hollywood thriller teasers keep the enigma rolling throughout the entire trailer.
The long-shot of the two antagonist's walking down a dim lit hallway is the only fully body glimpse the audience have to be able to analyse the characters. we also included a fade in - fade out editing feature to give the illusion of a blink/flash. This was done in order to show the traumatic damage that the victims have to endure even when they close their eyes. This long shot also reveals the gas mask which was included in our poster and magazine, this allowed for consistency across our product. The antagonist's in this shot are revealed in low key lighting, this is significant as it emphasizes on their dark, malevolent nature and thus solidifying their role as antagonists.
Characters - Victims
The victims are shown in the second part of the three part structure. we did this on purpose as we intended to contrast the way in which the characters were developed. In the sense that we would show them as average people and contrast it with them being trapped or tortured. This allowed us to develop our characters significantly. These shots are edited to be fast paced whereby they appear to the audience very abruptly and leave quickly to emphasize on the amount of victims the antagonist has claimed, this also allowed us to further the sense of enigma since the audience do not have much time to analyze the situation and are left questioning themselves.

The victims are all introduced in a state of vulnerability. in one scene we have one of the victims trying to fight off one the masked men but eventually losing and being dragged away, we maintained a long shot as the character was fighting away the antagonist and switched to a low angle when she was being dragged away to resonate the power that the antagonist have over the victims.
Title and Captions

The title 'Conscious' is maintained throughout our print work and teaser trailer, this is simply because we wanted the audience to be able to identify our products together. The name Conscious was chosen in both a metaphorical and juxtaposed manner. For example, the victims have made a conscious decision to take this exam however the title is juxtaposed in the sense that the victims are unaware of their surroundings whilst they are captured, they are trapped and unsure of what to do or where to go. This links with the narrative of our trailer and will also grab the attention of the spectator since it is a simplistic title with a deeper meaning which is masked away from the audience. This also connotes the enigma codes as it will leave the audience pondering and questioning what the title actually means in regards to the narrative.
Captions are extremely important in a teaser trailer, in the sense that they are able to emphasize on enigma with their abrupt appearances on screen. They also feed into the core theme of a teaser trailer, confusion, whereby captions do not allow the teaser trailer to flow continuously thus leaving the audience in a state of mystery and confusion. We wanted to achieve this same state of confusion and mystery using captions therefore we placed captions frequently between shots throughout our trailer. These captions maintained the same color of white throughout the teaser trailer, this was done in order to uphold the minimalist nature and also because white is a very neutral and cold color, it does not exert much emotion, this exemplified on the enigmatic nature of the narrative since it does not give away any information.

Props

We used a range of props in order to portray our narrative and uphold the thriller genre. Our main prop would be the gas mask and the white overalls, this was featured throughout our print work and teaser trailer which allowed to create a brand and allow the audience to associate each product with each other. We also used exam tables in order to add to the realism of the teaser trailer, realism allows the spectator to feel as if they are apart of the trailer, it is the perfect bridge between real life and fantasy. Furthermore, we used heavy makeup on the victim that is unconscious on the table to properly emphasize on the severity of the situation, blood makeup and bruises allows the audience to wonder what happened to the character thus implementing the enigma codes.
Each prop connotes the realism and severity of their situation. for example, we used ropes and belts to keep the victims bound in various shots. This developed the theme of no escape and entrapment, whereby the victims are in a situation where they have no control.

Editing Effects
The main editing effect we utilized is the fade in - fade out. This is a conventional editing technique in Hollywood teaser trailers as it can be used to break the pace of editing and implement a new pace. We used this only once in our Teaser trailer where the two masked men are walking side by side in the hallway which was at the end of the teaser trailer. This was done to break the fast paced editing and round up the teaser trailer with slow paced editing. The rest of our teaser trailer consisted of fast paced cuts in order to reflect the severity of the situation.

Non-Diegetic sound

Non-Diegetic sound is extremely important in the connotation of themes and enigma. After placing all of our shots on the timeline, we searched for the perfect Non-diegetic music to run through our teaser trailer, we used two different types of non diegetic music which were edited together to ensure professionalism. We also used sound effects to connote danger, for example, when a victim was introduced in the opening half of the teaser trailer, a prominent thump sound effect was simultaneously played, we found this worked really well and decided to keep it in.

Camerawork - High angle

The high angle was very significant and prominent throughout our teaser trailer. Conventionally, high angles are used to portray an overpowering element. This is what we intended to use the high angle for, in order to uphold our theme of an overpowering nature that entraps the victim. For example this is seen with the waterboarding shot whereby the victim is trapped and clearly overpowered by the antagonist. High angles let the audience know how powerful the antagonist is compared to the victim.
Another example is when another victim is tied to a chair and then injected with a needle. This was filmed using a high angle in order to uphold the theme of entrapment, this theme is shown through a high angle as the antagonist uses power to entrap the victim thus portraying his overpowering status.

Camerawork - close ups

Close ups are typical in a teaser trailer, this is because they do not give away too much information instead they add to the enigma of the trailer.
For example, in our five second flash we added a close up of on the victims looking up and directly into the camera. This was a perfect end to our five second flash as the close up allows the audience to ponder a variety of questions such as who is she, why does she look at us in such a distressed way, thus adding to the enigmatic themes.
Furthermore, using close ups to portray the victim's wounds was done intentionally to attract sympathy from the audience. Close up shots show things in more detail than a majority of other shots, therefore showing the cuts and bruises in detail would allow the audience to realize the gravity of the situation and thus they will sympathize with the victims.

Camerawork - Tracking dolly shot

During the research process, we looked at many trailers and tried to identify their conventions. We took major inspiration from the Batman vs Superman trailer whereby they constantly refer back to tracking shot throughout the trailer. We implemented this into our trailer but not to the same extent as Batman vs Superman, we only referred back to the exam shot twice. This type of tracking shot using the dolly allowed our trailer to look refined and professional, this shot also helped with enigma by confusing the order with this unique structure.
Magazine cover

Magazine cover
After extensive research, as a group we decided to use Total film as our base foundation for our magazine cover. During our research we found a total film magazine that featured Angelina Jolie, we decided to use this as our guideline whilst making our magazine cover. We did this because we believe the cover itself followed our themes for example, the main image is simplistic yet impactful, the color blue is harsh and depicts the cold, dark nature of our trailer. In our trailer, we wanted to follow these intense colors and prominent imagery. In our magazine cover the blue is a lot lighter and colder, our image is central following the rule of thirds structure.

Forms and Conventions
During our research, we saw reocurring themes and conventions within the Total film magazines. It was crucial that we followed this structure of design, we used it as foundation to base our magazine on. For example, we were able to enhance our skills on the placement of cover lines to make sure our cover looks full but not to the extend that it is overdone. The Total Film masthead was quite simple to capture since there is rarely any change, whereby the main image usually overlaps the middle section of the masthead, we captured this using the head of the masked man. We included our movie title in a cover title directly beside our main image as we were replicating the Angelina Jolie total film cover whereby the film title is subtle yet visible.

Rule of Thirds
The Rule Of Thirds is a structure followed in the industry to position important elements in the frame such as main image and masthead. This structure is simply acquired using 2 horizontal lines and 2 vertical lines, it provides guidance and insurance that the audience will be attracted by the main image. For example, the antagonist's face is center framed with parts slightly passing the upper line and left line to ensure the image looks more natural rather than forced. The top half of the horizontal lines feature the masthead, this is conventional across all magazines we researched as the first thing the audience need to acknowledge is the title of the magazine. The bottom half features cover lines and graphics, this is a reoccurring theme in total film magazines therefore we integrated this within our magazine cover.
Planning
During our planning process, as a group we sketched our ideas for the magazine cover. As shown below we did not sketch a total film cover, overtime we changed our initial empire sketch to a total film magazine as we believed it suited our theme a lot more than empire or sight and sound. After sketching the covers, we pitched them to our peers for feedback, initially the empire magazine cover was the most preferred therefore in our final project we kept the imagery idea for the magazine cover but changed to total film.
Masthead

Mastheads are the defining feature of a magazine cover. They allow the audience to identify the magazine and also they allow the audience to recognize a brand. Total film is consistent with the white theme complimented by sharp lettering. Typically, the "M" encapsulates the date the magazine is published followed by the pricing and the website. In order for our magazine cover to exert professionalism, we mirrored this convention. Also, Total Film mastheads are typically overlapped by a head or object, especially the middle section of "Film", we also replicated this using our main image to cover the bottom half of the letter "L".
Coverlines

Cover lines are arguably the most significant part of a magazine cover, they provide additional information to the audience about what is featured within the magazine. This also allows the magazine to look tempting for the reader as they want to find out more. Cover lines are featured all around the main image, this is to provide space for the main image as well to provide enough snippets of information to grab the reader's attention. Our cover lines followed the same color scheme of White followed by blue, this was to enhance the cold blue tone we upheld on the cover. Our cover lines featured "On set exclusives" and "Exclusive Talks" in order to mirror the Angelina Jolie magazine cover whereby they try to grab the attention of readers. At the bottom of our magazine cover, we featured exclusive access to relevant films at the time, we also included talks from the directors about these films. This allowed the magazine cover to gain a professional edge as this is seen within professional magazines whereby they will tease the audience with exclusive access to new films.
pug

A PUG is a snippet of information or a promotion for other films encapsulated within a simple shape such as a circle. PUGS are usually highlighted in bright colors or they feature a graphic within their shape in order to catch the reader's eye. In our magazine cover we featured a white circle PUG with deadpool as the graphic entitled ""Ryan Reynolds on Deadpool 2", this was the perfect PUG as PUGS are supposed to be eye catching and contemporary. The blue writing within the PUG also matched our overall cold blue and white theme. The PUG is the final touch to any magazine, it rounds up the magazine in simplistic fashion, especially graphic PUGS.
Main Image

The main image is the most important part of any magazine cover, it is regarded as the main selling point. After our feedback from our peers regarding the sketches, we opted to keep the main image our peers preferred but change the magazine to Total Film as it would work better. We chose the gas mask antagonist as it allows a clear correlation between all three products, the teaser trailer, magazine cover and poster. Initally we opted for a close up of the masked man but upon research we realised that the conventional Total Film magazine usually feature a medium shot as a main image therefore we retook the photo to match this convention. Our main image also follows the convention of covering up the middle section of the masthead slightly, this allowed our magazine cover to grasp the essence of professionalism. We took the picture on a white background initally and whilst editing we made the background darker with a tinge of subtle blue to give off that cold, harsh atmosphere. This also allowed the black gas mask to stand out and catch the eye of the reader.
Poster

Inspiration

During the research process, we were identifying the forms and conventions that create a movie poster, we came across a few good inspirations but the two that stuck were Face Off and The Tortured. I merged these two films into one to create Conscious by using the gas mask idea from the tortured and the merging of faces from Face Off.

Main images
The main images were partially inspired by two film posters, The Tortured and Face Off. I adopted the merging of faces idea from Face off and complimented it with the Gas mask. The main image of the merging faces is a metaphorical symbol for equality between characters, in the sense that it does not matter who you are, there is no escape or exception. The faces are merged together by a man in a suit, the audience can make the assumption that this is the government official who runs the operation, his body in the poster is the bridge between two faces, he merges them together. This is a symbolic depiction of his power over the victims. The unidentified man faces away from the audience, his identity is unknown to the audience. This exemplifies the enigmatic codes. Furthermore, the second image of the Gas mask was used for correlation, in the sense that the audience can see a clear correlation between all three products and this thus creates a brand for the audience to associate with. The Gas mask is also a symbolism for enigma and mystery, in the sense that the antagonist is never revealed to the audience throughout the teaser trailer.

Background
The background to our poster is unorthodox, in the sense that it does not directly link to the magazine cover but it does subtly. For example, although the color scheme has changed to a more sinful, warning orange; the daunting ice cold blue is still visible around the edges, especially within the smoke at the bottom. This was done on purpose to show how the warm colors, which is a represention of the glimpse of hope still lives within the victims, is being swallowed by the icy blue, a metaphor for the ice cold antagonist. thus it creates the illusion that the colors are juxtaposed but at the same time compliment each other. For example, the top half of the poster is a lot warmer since it represents hope and therefore it is fitting to have such colors on the faces of the victims, whereas the bottom half is darker, the harsher blue is shown to represent the antagonist and also to create a correlation between the poster and the magazine cover.
Title

For our title, we went for a minimalist look. A simple white banner overlapped by a black banner to create the white edge, complimented with very thin and sharp lettering also in white to stand out on the black banner. This really stood out in the poster which is important since a strong title is one of the most important factors of a poster, it is meant to catch the audience's attention. The black on white theme also allows for correlation regarding our teaser trailer since in the end the title is shown in the same format, with only the font being different. the name Conscious was chosen in both a metaphorical and juxtaposed manner. in the sense that the victims have made the conscious decision to take this exam however the title is juxtaposed in the sense that the victims are unaware of their surroundings whilst they are captured, this enhances the theme of entrapment, a core theme in the thriller genre.
Billing Block

The billing block final touch to a Poster, it outlines the roles of each person involved in the project and also gives credit to the people involved. We followed the conventional way to write a billing block whereby the names are always bold and capitalized to allow the persons name to stand out from the writing. The billing block is a very subtle grey, it perfectly blends into the smoke and background without getting lost in the colors. This is perfect as the billing block is supposed to be quite subtle, yet still readable in order to not distract the audience from the main imagery of the poster.

Starring Actors

During the research process, it became clear that the majority of thriller posters featured the Actors/Actresses names across the top of the poster. In order for our poster to achieve a professional status, we followed this convention and mirrored the placement of the names. We followed a minimalist structure when placing the names, for example, the lettering is sharp and the sizing is small, we also ensured the names were evenly spaced out to solidify the professionalism.
