This issue talks about different aspects in the fishing industry; which includes the pros and cons and the different factors in the fishing industry.
Collapse of the West Coast Fishery
A good example of the different factors in the fishing industry is the collapse of the west
coast fishery. The west coast fishery collapsed due to a number of reasons, but the most important and notable ones are sustained yield management and illegal fishing as over-fishing depleted the fish stocks.
Where is this relevant?
This issue is all over Canada, but...
We are focusing on the different fisheries in Canada such as the West Coast fisheries, the East Coast fisheries, and the Freshwater fisheries.
natURAL factors
The fisheries on the east coast of Canada do better than those on the west coast. Why?
  • Water quality
  • Width of continental shelf
  • Amount of sunlight that permeates into the water- leads to-
  •  Higher amounts of plankton
  • Attracts more fish
This makes it easier to catch fish. These are examples of natural factors that affects this industry.
Problems faced
Problems faced by this industry include:
 Overfishing
  • Trawling
  • Illegal fishing
