'The Goonies' Genre Analysis
by Luke Furr
Opening Analysis
In the beginning of the opening sequence, we immediately see an action sequence, and get introduced to the antagonists of the film, as we seen them escape. We further see a chase scene with the police and the antagonist, and between the chase scene, we are introduced to the main characters- who are children, doing there separate thing. We can see this as the score and the ambient sound of the police chase cut out, and we are left with dialogue of the characters who are being introduced.
Mis-En-Scene
The location of which the opening sequence is being filmed in streets shows how ordinary the location is and makes us contradict it being an action adventure film. However this changes further into the film. The props also used- especially with the character with the gadgets, shows he could be very intelligent and one of the smart people of the group.
Sound
The score used in the opening sequence is very vital in creating a intense dramatic opening. For instance the strings help to contribute to this. However the score cuts from time to time, once we introduced to the main characters. However we still witness the car chase in the background, with the sound effects of the police sirens. This shows us the main characters that are being introduced and how they are important in developing the storyline.
Camera Work
Throughout the opening sequence we see many close ups, long shots and mid-shots used in the clip, especially when the car chase is taking place, and the cuts to the characters. It helps us show what kind of person they are from what they are doing, and how they all contribute in developing the storyline. The Mid Shot in the beginning with the antagonist facing the prison once he comes out, shows his relief of escaping.
Editing
There is quite a lot of editing used, mainly during the car chase. This helps to engage the audience, and keep them interested in the film. This can be seen with the jump cuts and cross-cutting between the different characters. And also the action match which is being used, whilst being introduced to the character.
This helps to mimic the car chase that is taking place away from the TV and again helps to empathize with the character and makes us hate the antagonist, already in the opening sequence.
Titles
The titles in this opening sequence is very unique. They are bold and appear in front of the frame, which shows that they want to show the appreciation and contribution of the actors and the people who made the film. They are bold white which we immediately notice, and they are mainly shown with the introduction of the characters, so we can distinguish who they are and what role they play in the film.
Genre
We can see that this opening sequence is of the action adventure genre. We can see this because we see an action sequence in the whole of the opening sequence, which in some cases is unusual as action adventure films tend to set the storyline of the film. Nevertheless we still know that it is an action adventure genre due to the score used and the editing and camerawork also been used in place. The score and dialogue seem quite comical which reduces some of the tension, showing that it is not a serious action adventure film.
