Introduction
  • The Taiga Plains has an area of 550 000 kilometers making it Canada's sixth largest ecozone. 
  • There is about 22,000 people that lives in this ecozone. 60% of this population are Aboriginals but they are mainly Dene-people who's ancestors came to this ecozone thousands of years ago. 
  • The major cities in this ecozone are: -Fort Nelson 
-Inuvik 
 -Hay River 
 -Fort Smith 
 -Fort Simpson
Although the Taiga Plains of the northern part of Canada is widely forgotten, it is still a very beautiful and exciting part of the Canadian ecozones.
location
  • Approximately 90% of the Taiga Plains is located at the western Northwest Territories.
  • It also extends into northeastern British Columbia and Alberta.
  • It is centered at the Canada's largest river, the Mackenzie River.
  • Into the west of this ecozone are all mountains.
  • The Arctic is to the east.
  • To the south are the boreal forests of the Boreal Plains.
Landforms
  • The Taiga Plains ecozone is horizontally layered with sedimentary rocks such as limestone, shale and sandstone.
  • Most of it's terrain is flat.
  • The Mackenzie River flows right through this ecozone and dominates the west since it is a really large river.
  • Wetlands cover about 50% of this ecozone.

Some rocks that were found in this ecozone had fossils carved on them from the early marine creatures that used to live here.
climate
  • The Taiga Plains has short cool summers and long cold winters.
  • The average temperature in the summer in the northern part of this ecozone is 7 degrees Celsius and in the south is 14 degrees Celsius.
  • In the winter the average temperature is -26 degrees celsius. In the Mackenzie Delta is -15 degrees and also in the portion of where British Columbia and Alberta is. 
  • Snow and fresh water ice lasts here 6 to 8 months.
  • There is also minimum rainfall here that are only about 200-500 mm a year.
Vegetation
  • Majority of the species of plants in this ecozone are adapted to forest fires since it is very common here.
  • Species of plants that are adapted to it are: 
-paper birch
-willows
-trembling aspen
-tamarack
-green alder
-white spruce

  • Permafrost is usually present in this ecozone making the soil cold and dry and as the result it provides poor soils to the species of plants that grown in this ecozone.
  • Along the riverbanks of this ecozone is where smaller plants tends to grow such as the:
-fire snag
-wild rose
-labrador tea
-cotton grass
-moss
-blueberries

wildlife
  • The most common mammals in the Taiga plains are the:
    • moose
    • woodland caribou
    • wood bison
    • wolf
    • black bear
    • marten
    • lynx
    • arctic squirrel 
  • The most common bird species includes the:
    • common redpoll
    • gray jay
    • common raven
    • red-throated loon
    • northern shrike
    • sharp-tailed grouse
    • fox sparrow
  • ducks, geese and swans tends to migrate into the Arctic coast and breed there.
  • The common predators in this ecozone are the Bald Eagle and the Osprey.
industry and trade
  • The Taiga Plains ecozone has a major role on fur trade, the development of frontier oil, gas resources and water transportation that goes through Northwestern Canada.
  • The GDP of this ecozone is 0.5 billion dollars.
Human Activities
  • Hunting, trapping and fishing are the most common activities at the Taiga Plains.
  • Mining, oil and gas extraction, some forestry and eco-tourism are the industrial activities in this ecozone.
Tourism
  • There are multiple places for camping out late at night, or skiing in its mountains. 
  •  The Taiga Plains is home to the world's largest Wood Bison herd so if you want to go see it you will have to visit the nesting site in Whooping Crane.
  •  It has unique salt plains from when salt water evaporated a long time ago leaving salt mounds behind.
  • There are a variety of Hotels where you can stay in.
  • Alot of tourist attractions you can go to like the:

-The Great Bear Lake
-Wood Buffalo National Park
-The Nahanni National Park Reserve
-Northern Frontier Visitors Center
